UCLA FOOTBALL NOTEBOOK: MCGEE: MANY HAPPY RETURNS?

Byline: BRIAN DOHN Staff Writer

It is foolish to think anyone will replace Maurice Drew in UCLA's punt return In American and Canadian football a punt return is one of the punt receiving team's options to respond to a punt. A player (usually a second or third string wide receiver or running back) positioned many yards from the line of scrimmage will attempt to catch or pick up the ball  game, but freshman tailback Jeremy McGee wants to try.

The speedy McGee, who timed in 4.39 seconds in the 40-yard dash and ran a 10.51 in the 100 meters in the spring, will get the chance to make an impression returning kicks and punts in training camp.

``I was the man at returning (in high school),'' McGee said. ``I'm looking forward to it. (Bruins) Coach (Karl) Dorrell talked to me about it. In fact, he mentioned it to me.''

Drew established an NCAA- record 28.5 yards per punt return last season, and brought three back for touchdowns. McGee averaged 26.5 yards per punt return and 34.2 yards per kick return at Baton Rouge Baton Rouge (băt`ən rzh) [Fr.,=red stick], city (1990 pop. 219,531), state capital and seat of East Baton Rouge parish, SE La.  (La.) McKinley High last season. He had three returns for touchdowns.

``I'm trying to bring the same excitement (as Drew), if I get a shot at it,'' McGee said. ``I think I can do pretty well at it. And I love kick returns. Bruins tailback Chris Markey holds the edge now in the punt-return game, but McGee believes he will challenge for the spot.

``We need to see him scrimmage, but he has elusiveness,'' Dorrell said. ``He's an impressive young man. I like him as a punt returner Punt returner (PR) is a position on special teams in American football. Description

Korey Bosworth, Aaron Whittington and Fred Holmes are vying to start in Hale's absence at strong-side linebacker. However, Dorrell declined to comment on how Hale's reps would be impacted as preparation for the Utes nears.

``They're still practicing,'' Dorrell said. ``They just won't be playing the game.''

``We don't think it's anything significant,'' Dorrell said.

Secondary look: Strong safety Chris Horton, free safety Dennis Keyes and cornerback Trey Brown had virtually locked up starting positions, as expected, and Dorrell said Rodney Van was the leader at the other corner.
