UCLA FOOTBALL NOTEBOOK: LB HALE TO START BOWL.

Byline: BRIAN DOHN Staff Writer

It took all season, but UCLA UCLA University of California at Los Angeles

  • John Hale (1636–1700), minister in Beverly, Massachusetts, involved with the Salem witch trials.
won back his starting strong-side linebacker spot.

Hale said he was told by the coaching staff he would start Dec.27 when the Bruins meet Florida State in the Emerald Bowl The Emerald Bowl is a post-season college football bowl game certified by the NCAA that has been played annually at 40,800-seat AT&T Park (home of the San Francisco Giants) in San Francisco, California, since 2002.  at AT&T Park in San Francisco San Francisco (săn frănsĭs`kō), city (1990 pop. 723,959), coextensive with San Francisco co., W Calif., on the tip of a peninsula between the Pacific Ocean and San Francisco Bay, which are connected by the strait known as the Golden .

Hale entered August training camp as the starter, but he was suspended for the first game of the season against Utah because of an offseason arrest and lost his starting job to Aaron Whittington.

``That I'm the starter again, it shows some trust on (the coaching staff's) part,'' said Hale, who has 14 tackles. ``It feels good to finally get back to where I want to be. It's a good feeling, and I want to try and keep it.''

Hale, who started seven games as a freshman in 2005, made a pair of starts late in the season, but that was due to Whittington's injured ankle. Whittington started the season finale against USC An abbreviation for U.S. Code. , but aggravated his ankle injury and Hale played much of the game.

``One of the things (linebacker) coach (Chuck Bullough) told me was that I can only control myself, and don't sit there and look at how other people were playing,'' Hale said. ``I just looked at how I could get better. I did a lot more film study, (improved) conditioning-wise and strength training. It was just the regular stuff, but doing it harder and pushing yourself to the next level.''

No senior bowls: Despite two all-American seniors in kicker Justin Medlock Justin Charles "J-Med" Medlock Born October 23, 1983 in Fremont, California is a free agent American football kicker. He was drafted by the Kansas City Chiefs and played only one regular season game for the team.  and defensive end Justin Hickman Justin Hickman (born July 20, 1985 in El Paso, Texas) is an American football defensive end with the Washington Redskins. He played collegiately at the University of California at Los Angeles. , no UCLA player is scheduled to participate in a postseason senior all-star game An all-star game is an exhibition game played by the best players in their sports league. The players are often chosen by a popular vote of fans of the sport and the game often occurs at the halfway point of the regular season, although this is not the case for some all-star games .

The Senior Bowl, the most highly respected of the games, is tentatively full and does not have a UCLA player in it. UCLA is working to get a few of its seniors placed in other games.

Moline update: Bruins coach Karl Dorrell said backup defensive tackle Chase Moline had injections to alleviate the pain in his back. Moline, who missed three games, said earlier this season he was suffering from a herniated disc. He is expected to play against Florida State.

Trouble Bruin? Florida State coach Bobby Bowden said he spoke with Emerald Bowl officials last month about possible opponents, and UCLA wasn't initially mentioned. However, once the Bruins became a possibility, Bowden perked up.

``I said, `Boy, I hope it's UCLA.' That's before I saw them (beat USC),'' Bowden said.

``But the reason I said that is because they have such a great name over in this part of the country, as well as all the country. You have to say UCLA is one of the elite programs in the nation.

``But, boy, after I saw them on TV, I started looking at some of those other names.''
