kicking competition goes to - Jimmy Rotstein and Brian Malette.

UCLA coach Karl Dorrell Karl Dorrell (born December 18, 1963 in Alameda, California) is the first black head coach in the history of the UCLA Bruins college football team, a position he took on December 18, 2002.  will play both freshman walk-on kickers in Friday's Sun Bowl. Rotstein will kick field goals and PATs, and Malette will do kickoffs.

``It was really close,'' Dorrell said. ``When one would make one, the other would miss, and (vice versa VICE VERSA. On the contrary; on opposite sides. ). It was back and forth. Both had done a great job getting themselves ready for this opportunity. Brian has a little bit stronger leg, so we'll utilize him on our kickoffs, and Jimmy has a little better technique on field goals and we'll use him on our placekicking.''

Rotstein and Malette, who are good friends, replace Justin Medlock Justin Charles "J-Med" Medlock Born October 23, 1983 in Fremont, California is a free agent American football kicker. He was drafted by the Kansas City Chiefs and played only one regular season game for the team. , who was arrested earlier this month on a DUI charge.

Rotstein made 7 of 15 field goals his senior season at Brentwood School Brentwood School is the name of some notable schools:

``That's why you have two guys,'' Dorrell said. ``If one doesn't seem to be able to handle the duties then we'll have the other guy step in. ... They're both walk-ons. They usually wouldn't have this opportunity in a normal circumstance.''

--What a difference: Dorrell walked off Socorro High's field Wednesday with a big smile. He couldn't have been happier with this week's bowl preparation. He admitted that he didn't feel this way the past two years - UCLA lost to Wyoming in the Las Vegas Bowl The Las Vegas Bowl is an NCAA-sanctioned Division I-A post-season college football bowl game that has been played annually at 40,000-seat Sam Boyd Stadium in Las Vegas, Nevada since 1992.  last year and Fresno State in the Silicon Valley Classic the previous year.

``These were very upbeat, spirited practices and I haven't felt that way the last two years,'' Dorrell said. ``The focus and effort is the best it's been since I've been here. They're anxious to play. They're representing the Pac-10 and the Pac-10 is doing well so far. We have a lot of things to prove still with this program as far as this game.''

Said quarterback Drew Olson: ``It seems more intense and more focused.''
