Rice, coach Karl Dorrell Karl Dorrell (born December 18, 1963 in Alameda, California) is the first black head coach in the history of the UCLA Bruins college football team, a position he took on December 18, 2002.  sat down to watch the game film.

His interpretation?

``I was pleasantly surprised, actually, given what we did,'' Dorrell said Monday.

Rather than dwell on scoring touchdowns on only two of five trips into the red zone, or on quarterback Ben Olson's two fumbles and interception, or the defense giving up a few big plays to breathe life into a Rice program that last won on the road in 2003, Dorrell opted for optimism.

Defensively, he pointed toward Rice going 2 for 13 on third down, rushing for 53 yards and having 184 yards of total offense.

``Defensively, we did really, really well,'' Dorrell said. ``I think we're a little bit hard on ourselves, which is good, about the overall feeling after the game. When we came back and watched the tape on Sunday, I was really pleased with the efforts. Really, I think everybody played pretty hard.''

Offensively, although UCLA's 26 points were the fewest Rice allowed in 16 games and the Bruins don't yet have a rushing touchdown, Dorrell singled out the running game and gave kudos to the interior of the offensive line for clearing the way for tailback tail·back

``We made a few mistakes, critical mistakes,'' Dorrell said. ``When you turn the ball over, it stalled some drives. We moved the ball very, very well. Wow, the run game, it was unbelievable with what we were able to accomplish from running the ball from Week 1 to Week 2.''

The role of a punt returner is to catch the ball after it is punted and to give his team good field position (or a touchdown if possible) by returning it.

Markey and Everett each muffed a punt Punt (pnt), ancient land S of Egypt accessible by way of the Red Sea. Its exact location has not been identified, but it probably included the Somali coast. .

``We're going to put them in more live situations in practice, in terms of getting the full coverage down,'' Dorrell said. ``I think all of them catch the ball well. I think the next step is putting them under pressure, getting covers down and distracting them. So we're going to spend a lot more time doing that this week.''

Safety Dennis Keyes will be UCLA's safety valve safety valve, device attached to a boiler or other vessel for automatically relieving the pressure of steam before it becomes great enough to cause bursting. , dropping back when the Bruins keep their defense on the field.

UCLA's preparedness: Several players said after the game the Bruins took four-touchdown underdog Rice lightly. Dorrell was asked if he agreed with that.

``No, I don't,'' Dorrell said. ``I think that's just a natural thing to say, given what happened at the end of the game. Everyone felt that there was just a lot of offense laid out there that was not taken advantage of. I think it's probably more offensive thinking than anything.

``Our defense felt like they played hard, played well, but offensively, it gives you that feeling when you don't get points on the board, and you get field goals instead of touchdowns.''
