UCLA FOOTBALL NOTEBOOK: DEFENSE GETTING A NEW ATTITUDE.

Byline: BRIAN DOHN Staff Writer

Most of UCLA's defensive drills are geared toward pursuing the football and hammering home the fundamentals, like proper pre-snap technique and making the correct reads.

But members of UCLA's defense said another change in its defensive preparation is attitude, and that was evident during the first week of training camp.

``I think we're more physical,'' junior defensive tackle Brigham Harwell said. ``We've learned the last two years that our defense hasn't been up to par, so we know what we have to do know. I think we're more aggressive, and technical-wise with our skills, (the coaches) are making it better.''

Harwell said there is also a change in philosophy on the defensive line.

``Last year was more penetration,'' Harwell said. ``This year, we have that too, but we're more gap sound. We control our gaps and get up field after. We're more, stop the run first, then we get up the field.''

Under new defensive coordinator A defensive coordinator typically refers to a coach on a football team in the National Football League or college football who is in charge of the defense. This position aids the head coach a great deal in many ways by delegating play calling to other coaches and allowing the head  DeWayne Walker DeWayne Walker (born December 3, 1960) is an American football coach. ``We want to be aggressive,'' strong safety Chris Horton said. ``We want to attack people. If you're going to play on an attacking defense, you have to have the mentality of an attacker.''

Van dinged: Starting right cornerback Rodney Van sustained a sprained neck after colliding with safety Chris Horton during an 11-on-11 drill in Monday's morning session.

Van walked off the field by himself, and was taken to UCLA Medical Center UCLA Medical Center is a hospital located on the campus of the University of California, Los Angeles in Los Angeles, California. He was diagnosed with a possible concussion and could return to practice today.

Savage wait: Defensive tackle Darius Savage, who is 6-foot-4, 332 pounds, was a high-profile recruit who was supposed to garner immediate playing time, but so far he hasn't received many reps in practice.

Dorrell talked to Savage about staying positive and making the most of his limited chances.

``We like his size. He gives us a presence in there,'' Dorrell said. ``We have two weeks to figure out where he can help us.''

One place Savage should help the Bruins this season is in track and field.
