UCLA FOOTBALL NOTEBOOK: DAVIS STAYS FLEXIBLE.

Byline: Brian Dohn Staff Writer

In the past 12 months, Bruce Davis This article is about the American football player. For the American businessman, see Bruce Davis (video game industry).

Bruce Davis (born June 21, 1956, in Rutherfordton, North Carolina) is a former professional American football player.
was a defensive end, then a linebacker, then a hybrid defender. At one point last season, when he thought of transferring, he said he asked the coaching staff if he could play tight end.

It turned out to be one big circle.

began spring football practice Thursday, the always-smiling Davis was back at a familiar spot, playing defensive end - but with a twist.

The new defensive staff at UCLA is employing strong- and weak-side defense ends, rather than left and right, and Davis is playing on the strongside.

``Whatever they need me to do, I'm going to do,'' said Davis, who made 25 tackles last season. ``I'm just trying to play. It's where I am, so I'm happy there. I'm not going to say I'm unhappy at any position because I'm blessed. I'm playing football at UCLA.''

The 6-foot-3 Davis, who is up to 250 pounds, admits defensive end isn't his preferred spot, but added he has faith in the coaching staff that the right decision was made.

``In a perfect world, I'd like to play linebacker,'' Davis said. ``But it's not a perfect world, and my team needs me to play defensive end, so I'm going to do it until they decide they need me to play somewhere else.''

``If they ask me to do that, I'd do that to,'' Davis said. ``I feel like I can play a lot of positions, but if UCLA is asking me to play defensive end, that's what I'm going to do.''
