quarterback Patrick Cowan Patrick Edmund Cowan (born March 23, 1986 in Surrey, British Columbia) was the starting quarterback for the UCLA Bruins football team after starter Ben Olson was injured in the middle of the 2006 season. Cowan is a redshirt sophomore.  may have to master calling plays via hand signals this week, and it has nothing to do with the noise level anticipated when the Bruins play at No. 10 Notre Dame Notre Dame IPA: [nɔtʁ dam] is French for Our Lady, referring to the Virgin Mary. UCLA coach Karl Dorrell Karl Dorrell (born December 18, 1963 in Alameda, California) is the first black head coach in the history of the UCLA Bruins college football team, a position he took on December 18, 2002.  said Cowan lost his voice late in the loss to Oregon because of a hit to the throat. ``He had some problems on the way home from Oregon where it started to swell,'' Dorrell said. ``He was coughing up some blood a little bit, so we went and took him to the emergency room when he landed.''

Cowan was examined before the Bruins left Eugene and was deemed fit to fly, a school spokesman said. Dorrell added a CT scan CT scan: see CAT scan.

of Cowan's throat checked out fine, but he was diagnosed with an inflamed throat.

The voice issues also impacted the play-calling as well. Dorrell said Cowan's voice loss made it difficult for the tackles to hear protection calls and factored into Dorrell's decision not to implement a no-huddle offense in the waning minutes.

``His voice was gone by the last two or three series of the game,'' Dorrell said. ``That was difficult to really go through in that type of environment. Your quarterback, you can't really hear him in the huddle when he's trying to announce a play.

``We weren't doing two-minute (drill) stuff at the end, even though most of it is (hand) signals. But it's hard to do changes of protection and audibles if you can't communicate those things in a given time.''

``(Cowan's) doctor said he is on a no-talk clause right now. He can't even speak,'' Dorrell said. ``We're going to have to rest his voice box and not say anything. We're going to have to have Plan B anyway. The problem is you need communication.''

``I was trying to do something indirectly,'' Dorrell said, ``and unfortunately it did not line up that way with our special teams.''
