UCLA FOOTBALL NOTEBOOK: BRUINS EXPECT MORE FROM HICKMAN.

Byline: BRIAN DOHN Staff Writer

Justin Hickman Justin Hickman (born July 20, 1985 in El Paso, Texas) is an American football defensive end with the Washington Redskins. He played collegiately at the University of California at Los Angeles.  sacked quarterback Trent Edwards Trent Edwards (born October 30, 1983, in Los Gatos, California) is an American football quarterback who starts for the Buffalo Bills of the National Football League. He was drafted by the Bills in the third round of the 2007 NFL Draft. He played college football at Stanford.  on the last play of regulation, and again on third down in overtime of UCLA's dramatic win last season at Stanford.

That was when Hickman was at his best, but there were far too many other times the senior defensive end was just one of a group of rotating linemen for the Bruins.

That is why Hickman and UCLA UCLA University of California at Los Angeles

are hoping his three-sack, five-tackle effort against Rice is a harbinger.

``We're hoping that jump-starts something (to) a new level for him,'' UCLA coach Karl Dorrell Karl Dorrell (born December 18, 1963 in Alameda, California) is the first black head coach in the history of the UCLA Bruins college football team, a position he took on December 18, 2002.  said. ``We're going to need that type of consistency from him and from (defensive end) Bruce Davis This article is about the American football player. . Both of those guys have been very energetic in the backfield.

``They've been making some plays behind the line of scrimmage line of scrimmage

, and we need them to continue to do that.''

UCLA has been searching for an effective pass rusher since Dave Ball set the single-season record of 16.5 sacks as a senior in 2003. Hickman may be the closest UCLA has on its roster.

Hickman led the Bruins with 5.5 sacks last season, but three came against Stanford. He said being ``more mature'' and better prepared puts him in position to become more consistent this season.

``It's definitely coming,'' the 6-foot-2, 263-pound Hickman said. ``I feel different than any of the years I've been here. I know it's part of me being a senior, knowing it's my last go-round and needing to lead a young defense as the only (senior) starter. But it's something I feel inside of me, that I'm different than in past years.

``I was unhappy with my consistency. I'd make a play here, a play there. You want to make plays every game, and that wasn't happening. So far, the first two games I've made plays. I want it to translate into 12 weeks worth of plays.''

Split returns: Dorrell said junior receiver Marcus Everett and freshman Terrence Austin would serve as UCLA's punt returners against the Huskies.

``I'm teaching Marcus a different catching technique than he's used to, but he'll be fine,'' Dorrell said. ``He's a pretty good athlete with good hand-eye coordination hand-eye coordination Eye-hand coordination Surgery Oculomanual synchronization, required by surgeons, especially for laparoscopic surgery. See Laparoscopic surgery, Paradoxical movement. .''

Safety Dennis Keyes will serve as the punt returner when UCLA is playing it safe, with no return set up.

(knee) is running on a treadmill but is not close to returning, Dorrell said. ... UCLA's Sept.30 home game against Stanford will kickoff approximately 7:15 p.m. and be televised Fox Sports Net.
