Byline: Brian Dohn Staff Writer

The Washington Redskins are a professional American football team based in the Washington, D.C. area. The team plays at FedExField in Landover, Maryland, which is in Prince George's County, Maryland.

, is the leading candidate to become UCLA's defensive coordinator A defensive coordinator typically refers to a coach on a football team in the National Football League or college football who is in charge of the defense. This position aids the head coach a great deal in many ways by delegating play calling to other coaches and allowing the head , sources said late Saturday night.

Walker was scheduled to meet with Dorrell on Saturday about the position, and if things go well a hire could be made within a few days, according to sources.

defensive coordinator Larry Kerr made approximately $180,000 annually, and the financial aspect of hiring Walker is not believed to be a sticking point. The administration recently bumped the coaching salary budget up approximately $150,000.

But Walker wanted to learn more about UCLA's commitment, and whether he would be able to assemble the type of defensive staff he wants, sources added. The hiring would give the Bruins an NFL presence on their defensive staff, which should help recruiting.

Along those lines, sources said Saturday that Bruins defensive line coach Thurmond Moore, who replaced Don Johnson is February, is not expected to return, although no official announcement has been made yet.

Walker, 45, attended Pasadena's Muir High and played at Pasadena City College before playing two seasons at the University of Minnesota (body, education) University of Minnesota - The home of Gopher.

. He spent the last two years coaching in Washington's secondary coach under highly regarded defensive coordinator Gregg Williams.

Prior to joining Washington, Walker held a similar position with the New York Giants

However, in Los Angeles, Walker is best known as Carroll's first hire at USC. He served as Carroll's associate head coach, and also coached a secondary that was 16th in the nation in pass defense and was seventh in the nation with 19 interceptions in 2001.

Prior to joining Carroll at USC, Walker spent three seasons with the Patriots, two of which came under Carroll. Walker, like Dorrell, was also a participant in the NFL's minority coaching internship program, working with Carroll in San Francisco in 1996, and New England a year later.

Kerr was fired three days after the Redskins Redskins can refer to:
    • Redskin (slang), a controversial term referring to Native Americans
    • The Washington Redskins, a United States football team.
    • Redskin (subculture), a socialist or communist skinhead
    • The Redskins, a 1980s English left-wing soul/punk band
were eliminated by Seattle in the playoffs. Neither Dorrell nor Walker could be reached for comment.

If Walker accepts the job, he will be charged with turning around one of the worst defenses in the nation, but with an experienced defensive line and talent in the secondary with which to work. The Bruins, who went 10-2, were 113th of 117 teams in total defense (468.1 yards per game), 116th in rushing defense (232.7 ypg) and 108th in scoring defense (34.2 ppg).

In other UCLA coaching news, with the expected hire of Central Florida's D.J. McCarthy as receivers coach, Dorrell is expected to move Dino Babers to running backs coach to replace Eric Bieniemy, who left for the NFL's Minnesota Vikings, according to sources. Babers could also become recruiting coordinator, although special teams/safeties coach Brian Schneider could also take over that position.

Dorrell is also awaiting word from tight ends coach Jon Embree, who was offered the same position by the NFL's Kansas City Chiefs
The Kansas City Chiefs are a professional American football team based in Kansas City, Missouri. They are members of the Western Division of the American Football Conference (AFC) in the National Football League (NFL).
. A decision is expected in the next few days.
