UCLA FOOTBALL NOTEBOOK: BAD TIMING FOR INJURY BUG.

The Bruins travel to Oregon on Saturday, followed by a nonconference game at Notre Dame Notre Dame IPA: [nɔtʁ dam] is French for Our Lady, referring to the Virgin Mary.  on his knee today and Taylor, who has a sprained left ankle and didn't play in he second half, is supposed to have an X-ray as well.

But there's little time to worry about injuries to key players, not with the Ducks -- who were crushed by Cal 45-24 on Saturday -- and Fighting Irish next. The Bruins are 4-1, 2-1 in the Pac-10. Two more victories would make UCLA bowl eligible.

``It's huge,'' receiver Junior Taylor said. ``We've got to go out there and stay focused for 60 minutes these games. We've got to move the ball offensively and control the clock. We have to be balanced with the run and the pass and our defense just has to keep doing its part.''

``Those are both monumental places to play,'' cornerback Rodney Van said. ``Our loss at Washington prepared us for this.''

Quarterback controversy? It looks like UCLA's fall quarterback controversy really was a competition, especially after the way backup Patrick Cowan played on Saturday.

Cowan came in after Arizona lineman Jason Parker rolled over Olson's knee midway through the first quarter and led UCLA to a score on his first drive.

``Ben and Pat had a great camp,'' Taylor said. ``We had confidence in Pat. You don't see too many quarterbacks get hurt like that, but we didn't miss a beat. Pat's a great leader. He's quiet, but he's a funny quiet.''

Cowan completed 20 of 29 passes for 201 yards and twotouchdowns with no interceptions. Cowan completed his first four passes, and UCLA called for passes on his first two plays.

When asked if Olson was healthy who he would play at quarterback, UCLA coach Karl Dorrell laughed off the question, saying it was only 15 minutes after UCLA's win. It was a valid question, although by the looks of Olson on crutches, it would be a surprise if Olson played against Oregon.

Olson didn't think he suffered any damage to his anterior cruciate ligament anterior cruciate ligament

, which requires the longest rehab.

But Cowan was impressive, partly because UCLA didn't change its game plan with him in there.

``We learned our lesson trying to harness the offense and that's not what we wanted to do,'' Dorrell said. ``We're fortunate to have Ben and Pat who have knowledge of the offense. We didn't decide to leave any of our game plan out. We wanted to make a statement with Pat early.''
