This position aids the head coach by designing and scripting plays, delegating work to offensive position coaches during  for the fourth time in Karl Dorrell's five seasons.

Dorrell fired Jim Svoboda, who worked well in two seasons as UCLA's quarterbacks coach but was unable to make a successful transition to offensive coordinator in 2006.

Dorrell said he might take over running the offense.

``That's something I've thought about heavily since the bowl game,'' Dorrell said. ``That's part of the consideration, but I'm also looking at some outside candidates as well.''

Also, sources said UCLA's former offensive coordinator, Tom Cable, was interested in returning.

Dorrell's West Coast offense has failed to produce big numbers in three of his four seasons. He said an option was to implement another offense.

``We'll see about that,'' Dorrell said. ``I'm always looking for doing what's necessary for us to be competitive on offense.''

Svoboda excelled as an offensive coordinator at the Division II level, but his play-calling was highly criticized in the early part of the last season.
