UCLA FOOTBALL: PLAYERS PLEAD NOT GUILTY TO ASSAULT CHARGES HALE, WARD WON'T BE DISCIPLINED UNTIL CASE HAS OUTCOME, DORRELL SAYS.

The charges stemmed from a February altercation between guests during a party at the Running Springs home of Ward's parents.

Possible discipline for the players won't be decided until after the case is resolved, UCLA coach Karl Dorrell Karl Dorrell (born December 18, 1963 in Alameda, California) is the first black head coach in the history of the UCLA Bruins college football team, a position he took on December 18, 2002.  said.

"We are aware of the circumstances that occurred in Jess' parents' home," Dorrell said. "John and Jess called me the day after the incident and told me what happened. It appears that John and Jess were not involved in the altercation, other than trying to move it out of the house."

District attorney spokesperson Susan Mickey said Casey Coniglio, 19, and Franco Serrato, 18, were arrested shortly after the alleged incident.

It took nearly three months for Hale and Ward to be charged, and no bail was needed for their release.

Warrants for the two players were issued Wednesday. The players reported to court Thursday and were released on their own recognizance own recognizance (O.R.) n. the basis for a judge allowing a person accused of a crime to be free while awaiting trial, without posting bail, on the defendant's own promise to appear and his/her reputation. .

Michael Berger, the lawyer for Ward and Hale, did not return numerous phone messages.

In the past, Dorrell immediately suspended players when he learned of an arrest, but that is not the case with Hale and Ward.

"Based on the information available to us, we have decided to wait until the outcome of the legal process to impose any disciplinary action," Dorrell said.

Hale and Ward are due back in court May 17.

Hale started seven games last season and made 20 tackles. Ward redshirted in 2005.

Hale and Ward are the second and third Bruins arrested since the end of the 2005 regular season. Kicker Justin Medlock Justin Charles "J-Med" Medlock Born October 23, 1983 in Fremont, California is a free agent American football kicker. He was drafted by the Kansas City Chiefs and played only one regular season game for the team.  served a fourth-month suspension after a December arrest for DUI and was reinstated last month after pleading guilty to a misdemeanor.
