UCLA BASKETBALL: YES, VIRGINIA, UPSETS HAPPEN BRUINS HOPING TO AVOID ONE IN MAUI.

Byline: BRIAN DOHN Staff Writer

MAUI, Hawaii -- Nearly 24 years ago, a Ralph Sampson-led Virginia team, ranked No. 1 in the country, played a pair of games in Japan. On the trip back, the Cavaliers were looking for Looking for

On Dec. 23, 1982, Chaminade stunned everyone, including Virginia, with a 77-72 victory. It is a result that gives hope to every underdog, no matter how great, and one that keeps UCLA UCLA University of California at Los Angeles

 on his toes.

The sixth-ranked Bruins play Chaminade, now a Division II program, in the first round of the eight-team Maui Invitational tonight. UCLA's players are viewing the tournament as a chance to show early superiority against some of the best teams in the nation, and a defeat of Chaminade would send them into Tuesday's semifinals against either No. 22 Kentucky or DePaul.

``They still talk about it,'' Howland said. ``I mean, Ralph Sampson. That's 20 years ago, and we're still talking about it. That's how big of a deal it was. That Chaminade upset of Virginia will happen again at some point. I just hope it's not us.''

Chaminade is located in Honolulu, but hosts the tournament on the island of Maui, at the Lahaina Civic Center The Lahaina Civic Center is a sports, convention and entertainment complex located in Lahaina, Hawaii, on the island of Maui. It is the site of the annual Maui Invitational college basketball tournament, held every November and hosted by Chaminade University. . It traditionally is one of the top early in-season events, and this year also features No. 13, Memphis, No. 23 Georgia Tech, Oklahoma and Purdue.

``There's going to be a team that comes out of this tournament 1-2 that still will have a chance to have a really good year,'' said Howland, who visited the Lahaina Civic Center during a summer family vacation. ``The opportunity to play in the Maui, it's one of the most prestigious early tournaments in the country.''

The Bruins plan to use the tournament as a proving ground, much like they believe last season's trip to the NIT Season Tip-off The NIT Season Tip-Off is an annual college basketball tournament that takes place in November of each year, around the beginning of the season. The first two rounds are held at campus sites and the semifinals and the finals are held at Madison Square Garden.  semifinals served as launching point to put them back on the national landscape.

``We want to go in, get a big win under our belt and try to win the championship,'' UCLA sophomore wing Josh Shipp said. ``That's going to give us momentum going into the regular season.''

One chore for the Bruins will be the hectic schedule, even if UCLA does the expected and begins the tournament with a blowout of the Silverswords. Each team will play three games in less than 72 hours, and that figures to put a strain on the banged-up Bruins.

. Shipp missed all but four games last season because of hip surgery, and still experiences pain occasionally. And center Lorenzo Mata missed most of preseason because of knee surgery, and it would be unwise to play him massive minutes on threestraight nights.

The injury factors should give freshmen James Keefe (power forward) and Russell Westbrook (guard) plenty of playing time, and force Howland to use sophomores Ryan Wright (center) and Michael Roll (wing) more.
