The course uncovers how the metaphor of emptiness represents a special state of insight and reflection in Ch'an and Zen art. Students will explore how Chinese traditions of painting were interpreted by the Japanese, as well as which Buddhist sutras were used by the Zen schools as a basis for the "sudden style" of haboku, the unique flung-ink style of Zen painting. Students will read the Mumon Koan and other Zen texts in translation, and consider the approaches of Western interpreters of Buddhism from D. T. Suzuki and Alan Watts Alan Wilson Watts (January 6, 1915 – November 16, 1973) was a philosopher, writer, speaker, and expert in comparative religion. He was best known as an interpreter and popularizer of Asian philosophies for a Western audience. to contemporary researchers.
