A professor at UC Berkeley for 14 years, Katz is responsible for the creation of a number of multi-processing features used in advanced high performance computing systems today.

Among other accomplishments, Katz designed and created the revolutionary high performance storage system RAID (Redundant Arrays of Inexpensive Disks Redundant Arrays of Inexpensive Disks - Redundant Arrays of Independent Disks ). Katz is also known in the industry as designer of the snooping cache schemes used in many multi-processor servers on the market today.

Dr. Katz is currently working on a project called BARWAN BARWAN Bay Area Research Wireless Access Network  (Bay Area Research Wireless Access Network), developing wireless technologies that support seamless roaming in and out of buildings over a wide area.

He has also served as Deputy Director of the Computing Systems Technology Office of the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), U.S. government agency administered by the Department of Defense (see Defense, United States Department of). , where he established Internet mail accounts for President Bill Clinton and Vice President Al Gore. He participated on Gore's National Performance Review and played a lead role in formulating the federal research program in support of the administration's National Information Infrastructure Initiative.
