UB Networks Announces the GeoRim/FE 10/100 Fast Ethernet Switch Offering Speed and Flexibility at a Competitive Price; GeoRim/FE Switch Extends UB Networks Stackable Switch Product Offering to 100Mbps and is Gigabit Ethernet-Ready.SANTA CLARA Santa Clara, city, Cuba Santa Clara (sän`tä klä`rä), city (1994 est. pop. 217,000), capital of Villa Clara prov., central Cuba. , Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 9, 1996--UB Networks today announced the extension of its Fast Ethernet An earlier name for 100Mbps Ethernet. See 100Base-T. (networking) Fast Ethernet - A version of Ethernet developed in the 1990s(?) which can carry 100 Mbps compared with standard Ethernet's 10 Mbps. It requires upgraded network cards and hubs. product portfolio from the enterprise to the desktop with the introduction of the GeoRim/FE Fast Ethernet switch. The GeoRim/FE features eight 10/100 ports. It can be easily configured and effectively improves Fast Ethernet network performance and availability. The switch features Auto-Negotiation which configures each port for the best possible speed without user intervention and an aggressive system throughput exceeding 700,000 packets/second. "All the benefits 10BASE-T networks have derived from switching are now available for 100BASE-T environments," said Michael Szabados, vice president of product management for UB Networks' network products division. "And GeoRim/FE is Gigabit Ethernet-ready, so users will be able to embrace new technologies as standards are developed." Network Management GeoRim/FE is managed through industry leading NetDirector family of management applications fully integrated with leading network management platforms such as HP Openview HP OpenView was a Hewlett Packard product range consisting of an extensive portfolio of network and systems management products. In 2007 the entire HP OpenView portfolio was rebranded under the strengthened HP Software name. and IBM (International Business Machines Corporation, Armonk, NY, www.ibm.com) The world's largest computer company. IBM's product lines include the S/390 mainframes (zSeries), AS/400 midrange business systems (iSeries), RS/6000 workstations and servers (pSeries), Intel-based servers (xSeries) Netview. Users can also manage the GeoRim/FE with any SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol) A widely used network monitoring and control protocol. Data are passed from SNMP agents, which are hardware and/or software processes reporting activity in each network device (hub, router, bridge, etc. browser in most management applications. Per port RMON (Remote MONitoring) Enhancements to the management information base (MIB) structure used by the simple network management protocol (SNMP). In 1991, RMON added comprehensive network monitoring capabilities. support (Groups 1, 2, 3 and 9) is also included. Scalable and Expandable The GeoRim/FE switch supports eight dual-speed 10BASE-T and 100BASE-TX UTP UTP (uridine triphosphate): see uracil. (Unshielded Twisted Pair) See twisted pair. UTP - unshielded twisted pair ports. The front panel has two expansion slots that can be used to increase port capacity and to add ATM uplinks or multi-deviceVLAN support. Two-port UTP and Fiber expansion modules are available to expand the base unit port density from 8-ports to a maximum of 12-ports. The dual port fiber module supports long-distance Ethernet backbone connections in the full duplex mode of operation. The fiber expansion module is priced at $2,495 (US), and the copper port expansion module is $1,995 (US). Gigabit Ethernet Ready GeoRim/FE is designed to support Gigabit Ethernet as an uplink or backbone connection. As a future option, a Gigabit Ethernet uplink module will allow 1000Mbps connectivity. ATM Uplinks The expansion ports will support GeoLink ATM uplink modules. This future option will provide an OC-3 155Mbps pipe to ATM infrastructures such as the GeoSwitch/155 ATM switch or a GeoLAN/500 super switching hub. VLAN See virtual LAN. VLAN - Virtual Local Area Network Support The GeoRim/FE switch supports VNA VNA abbr. Visiting Nurse Association (Virtual Networking Architecture) allowing customers to create virtual workgroups by grouping ports within a single GeoRim/FE switch. This feature allows the GeoRim/FE switch to be divided into as many as four "sub-switches" for further segmentation and flexibility. This functionality will be expanded in the future to support VNA-II multi-device VLAN (virtual LAN) capabilities. By installing an InterSwitch module into an expansion slot, users can group ports in a virtual LAN across multiple switches. Pricing and Availability The GeoRim/FE switch is available today and competitively priced starting at $995 per port. This switch rounds out the UB Networks' Fast Ethernet stackable switch offering which includes the 12-port GeoStax/FE 100BASE-T stackable hub and the 8-port GeoStax/FE Micro 100BASE-T hub. All products are available both directly and through the UB Networks' distribution channel.
