UAW MEMBERS AT MURRAY OHIO RATIFY FIRST CONTRACT

DETROIT, Nov. 16 /PRNewswire/ -- UAW Local 1621 members, who work at Murray Ohio Manufacturing Company's lawn mower and bicycle factory in Lawrenceburg, Tenn., ratified their first labor contract by an overwhelming 93.5-percent margin in voting held on Monday. The new 34-month agreement covers approximately 3,500 workers at Murray Ohio, a subsidiary of the British-owned holding company, Tompkins P.L.C.
UAW President Owen Bieber and UAW Region 8 Director Bobby Lee Thompson called the new agreement a "tribute to the courage, perseverance, and, above all, the solidarity of UAW Local 1621 members and their families."
"Although it took nearly two years to force Murray Ohio to come to the bargaining table, the members of UAW Local 1621 never wavered in their determination to win a fair first contract. With this new agreement, our members have laid a solid foundation for building a new and far more constructive relationship between labor and management at Murray Ohio," Bieber and Thompson stated.
Highlights of the agreement include a $500 signing bonus; a 50-cent-an-hour wage increase retroactive to Nov. 1, 1993; a 30-cent wage increase in 1994 and a 25-cent wage increase in 1995; and substantial gains in retirement benefits.
The contract also provides on-the-job union representation, a full grievance procedure including binding arbitration, a joint health and safety committee, and a joint apprenticeship program.
