UAW FILES UNFAIR LABOR PRACTICE CHARGE AGAINST BLUE CROSS AND BLUE SHIELD

 DETROIT, Sept. 21 /PRNewswire/ -- The UAW took legal action against Michigan Blue Cross and Blue Shield on Monday, Sept. 20, charging the company with engaging in unfair labor practices. The action, filed with the regional office of the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) in Detroit, charges the company with:
 1) bargaining in bad faith by reneging on an agreement to extend the current contract;
 2) bargaining in bad faith by unilaterally changing employees' entitlement to sick days, vacation time and merit increases;
 3) failing to provide the union with information relevant and necessary for collective bargaining;
 4) failing to appear at a scheduled meeting and refusing to bargain with the union.
 Union members struck Michigan Blue Cross and Blue Shield statewide over these unfair labor practices on Monday, Sept. 20, after contract talks broke down over the previous weekend. The prior three-year contract covering approximately 3,700 UAW members at Blue Cross expired on Aug. 31, 1993.
