 UAW CONVENTION BEGINS SUNDAY, JUNE 14, IN SAN DIEGO
 The UAW's 30th Constitutional Convention is set to open at 1 p.m. on


Sunday, June 14, at the San Diego Convention Center, 111 W. Harbor Drive in San Diego. The convention is expected to run through Friday, June 19.
 More than 4,000 persons are expected to attend the convention, including delegates, alternates, invited guests, visitors and staff. The number of voting delegates eligible to attend is approximately 2,330. The UAW represents approximately 900,000 members in more than 1,100 UAW local unions in the U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico, as well as 450,000 retired members.
 UAW President Owen Bieber will deliver the keynote address on Sunday, June 14. Other convention speakers will include NAACP Executive Director Benjamin Hooks, AFL-CIO Secretary-Treasurer Tom Donahue, National Farmers Union President Leland Swenson, and California U.S. Senate candidate Dianne Feinstein. Messages will be delivered to the convention via video by U.S. Rep. Charles Rangel of New York, House Majority Leader Rep. Richard Gephardt of Missouri and U.S. Sen. John D. "Jay" Rockefeller IV of West Virginia.
 The main business of the convention is to consider resolutions on a wide range of social and economic topics, to consider proposed modifications to the UAW constitution, and to elect the officers and board members.
 The proposed schedule for the convention, which is subject to approval by the delegates, calls for the election of officers to be conducted on Wednesday, June 17.
 The UAW is governed between conventions by its elected International Executive Board. The board is currently composed of six officers and the regional directors of the 14 UAW regions. Under the UAW constitution, the International Union officers are elected by the entire convention, while regional directors are elected during the convention by delegates from their respective regions.
 The incumbent officers are: President Bieber; Bill Casstevens, secretary-treasurer; and vice presidents Odessa Komer, Ernest Lofton, Stan Marshall and Stephen P. Yokich. Komer will retire from office at this convention.
 The incumbent regional directors are: Region 1, Bob Lent; Region 1A, Bob King; Region 1C, Ruben Burks; Region 1D, Paul Mastos; Region 2, Warren Davis; Region 2A, Charles Bowling; Region 2B, Jack Sizemore; Region 3, William Osos; Region 4, Bill Stewart; Region 5, Roy Wyse; Region 6, Bruce Lee; Region 8, Bobby Lee Thompson; Region 9, Tom Fricano; and Region 9A, Phil Wheeler. Mastos, Bowling and Osos also will retire at this convention.
 ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
 The UAW Public Relations Department will have an office staffed during convention hours in Room 9 on the upper level of the special events area. The phone number is 619-525-6125. The adjoining Room 10 will be available as a working press room. The press room will be equipped with typewriters, telephones and a TV monitor to permit reporters to follow convention proceedings. The phones will be restricted to local, credit card and collect calls.
 Transcripts of major speeches will be made available as quickly as possible, along with releases, biographies and background materials.
 Provisions for TV coverage of the convention will include a platform in the convention hall (140-foot throw from platform to stage), which will be equipped with video and audio mult-boxes.
