U.S. military deaths in Iraq at 3,645


As of Thursday, July 26, 2007, at least 3,645 members of the U.S. military have died since the beginning of the Iraq war in March 2003, according to an Associated Press count. The figure includes seven military civilians. At least 2,990 died as a result of hostile action, according to the military's numbers.

The AP count is eight more than the Defense Department's tally, last updated Thursday at 10 a.m. EDT.

The British military has reported 163 deaths; Italy, 33; Ukraine, 18; Poland, 21; Bulgaria, 13; Spain, 11; Denmark, seven; El Salvador, five; Slovakia, four; Latvia, three; Estonia, Netherlands, Thailand, two each; and Australia, Hungary, Kazakhstan, Romania, South Korea, one death each.

The latest deaths reported by the military:

_ A soldier was killed Tuesday by a roadside bomb in Baghdad.

_ A soldier was killed Wednesday during a gunbattle in southern Baghdad.

The latest identifications reported by the military:

_ Army Sgt. Courtney D. Finch, 27, Leavenworth, Kan.; died Tuesday in Qayyarah of injuries from a non-combat incident; assigned to the 714th Maintenance Company, Kansas Army National Guard, Topeka, Kan.

_ Army Staff Sgt. Joshua P. Mattero, 29, San Diego; died Tuesday in Baqouba of wounds from an explosive; assigned to the 749th Ordnance Company, 63rd Explosive Ordnance Battalion, Andrews Air Force Base, Md.

_ Three Marines died Tuesday during combat in Diyala province. They were identified as Lance Cpl. Robert A. Lynch, 20, Louisville, Ky.; Cpl. James H. McRae, 22, Springtown, Texas; and Cpl. Matthew R. Zindars, 21, Watertown, Wis.

Lynch was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 12th Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division, III Marine Expeditionary Force, Okinawa, Japan.

McRae was assigned to the 3rd Maintenance Battalion, Combat Logistics Regiment 35, 3rd Marine Logistics Group, III Marine Expeditionary Force, Okinawa, Japan.

Zindars was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 11th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Pendleton, Calif.
