U.S. VISAPHONE SERVICE THROUGH SPRINT AVAILABLE TO SWISS CARDHOLDERS
WASHINGTON, May 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Visa cardholders from Corner Banca in Switzerland soon will join more than 3 million cardholders around the world who can use their Visa cards to charge long distance calls from the United States to virtually anywhere in the world through VisaPhone service provided by Sprint (NYSE: FON).
Corner Banca, one of Switzerland's largest Visa member banks, will offer the service as an enhancement to the more than 255,000 Visa cards it has issued nationwide. The VisaPhone service allows enrolled Visa cardholders to use their current Visa cards to place domestic and international long distance calls from the United States.
Corner Banca is the first bank in central Europe to provide the Sprint VisaPhone service to its cardholders. It joins more than 260 banks in 28 countries throughout Europe, Latin America and Asia that also have announced their intention to participate. Corner Banca plans to offer the service to its cardholders this month.
With the VisaPhone service, a Visa card serves as an economical, convenient calling card when used in conjunction with a "telecode" provided by the bank, VisaPhone users traveling in the United States will note a significant savings with VisaPhone as they bypass collect calls, expensive charges associated with hotel switchboards and costly long distance programs.
Travelers to the U.S. with Visa cards from any participating institution can use VisaPhone simply by dialing a Sprint toll-free number, followed by their Visa card number and a personal telecode. Pre-recorded voice prompts enable the cardholder to complete the call directly or through a Sprint operator.
For Corner Banca, Sprint has added German, French and Italian language dialing instructions. This is in addition to the English, Spanish, Portuguese, Korean and Japanese languages already offered to customers of its VisaPhone service. Sprint plans to add additional language support as needed.
VisaPhone users receive call detail and charges from Sprint on their monthly Visa card statements in their native currency. Cardholders may place long distance calls from any phone in the United States to any domestic location and to the more than 200 countries to which Sprint offers direct dial service.
"This service has become very popular among both business and tourist travelers as a cost-effective alternative to using hotel operators or placing collect calls," said Andrew Burroughs, vice president of Global Marketing for Sprint International, Sprint's international telecommunications subsidiary. "Business callers are attracted by the consolidation of retail and telephone transactions on one bill, and the mobility of the service, while tourist travelers enjoy the language support and ease of use."
Visa International is the largest consumer card payment system with more than 281 million cards issued through more than 22,000 banking institutions around the world.
Sprint is a diversified international telecommunications company with $8.8 billion in annual revenues and the United States' only nationwide all-digital, fiber-optic network. Its divisions provide global long distance voice, data and video products and services, and local telephone services to more than 4 million subscriber lines in 17 states.
