is demanding that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu clarify a statement by a leader of his political party that the government plans to settle a large number of Jews on the West Bank and in Gaza.

The aim is to find out if the comment by Michael Eitan, head of the Likud faction in the Israeli parliament, reflects Netanyahu's view, State Department spokesman Nicholas Burns Nicholas Burns may refer to:

``We are currently seeking more information about this,'' Burns said Wednesday in Geneva Geneva, canton and city, Switzerland

Eitan said Tuesday, ``There will be new neighborhoods and many Jews will come and live there.'' And, he said, ``This will be the true test of peace.''

Some 145,000 Jews live on the West Bank and Gaza, among 2 million Palestinian Arabs. Their settlements were restricted under two Labor-led Israeli governments that reached peace accords with the Palestine Liberation Organization Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), coordinating council for Palestinian organizations, founded (1964) by Egypt and the Arab League and initially controlled by Egypt. .

The accords did not uproot the Jews. The future of the settlements was left to further negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians.

, though, Palestinians fear that Netanyahu will play for time despite a formal resumption of peace talks while expanding the settlements.

In a letter to President Clinton, they accused the Israeli government of adopting irresponsible positions that ``create an atmosphere of distrust and lack of confidence in the peace process.''

A U.S. official said Israel had notified the United States that trailers to accomodate a rising population would be sent to the West Bank. The official, who demanded anonymity, said U.S. Ambassador Martin Indyk on Friday would request clarification of Eitan's statement in Jerusalem.

The late Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin called settlers ``cry babies'' and said he would not let them stand in the way of peace.
