U.S. POSTAL SERVICE LIFTS SUSPENSION OF EMERY WORLDWIDE

U.S. POSTAL SERVICE LIFTS SUSPENSION OF EMERY WORLDWIDE
PALO ALTO, Calif., Aug. 25 /PRNewswire/ -- Emery Worldwide today announced that the U.S. Postal Service has agreed to lift its temporary suspension of the company's right to participate in new USPS contracts.
The Postal Service said in a settlement with the company signed on Monday that the former suspension will have no bearing on evaluation of proposals for the two large, pending procurements for the operation of a jet freighter fleet for express mail and a new mail sortation hub in Indianapolis.
On June 29, 1992, the USPS suspended Emery from new contract awards, citing an inquiry by the Postal Inspection Service that centered around disputed reimbursement claims submitted as a result of an emergency start-up service that occurred in the "Desert Storm" operation of the Gulf War last year.
After a Postal Service audit and an internal financial review by the company, Emery withdrew those claims and subsequently submitted revised claims.
Under the agreement, Emery is not censured, penalized nor admits to charges of intentional over-billing. The company has maintained that the billing dispute and suspension were an unfortunate misunderstanding.
Under terms of the agreement, Emery will write a new company manual to be used in preparing, reviewing and submitting these special and unusual claims to the Postal Service. Additionally, the company will have its independent auditors review all such claims, which are unique and occur infrequently.
 W. Roger Curry, president and chief executive officer of Emery, said that, "It is our sincere hope that we can now move forward. The U.S. Postal Service is our largest customer and we value their business."
