This is the last of three insignia posters produced by Naval Aviation Naval aviation is the application of manned military air power by navies. Maritime aviation is the operation of aircraft in a maritime role under the command of land based forces such as RAF Coastal Command or United States Coast Guard.  History and Archives Office 178H, the final approving authority for Naval Aviation insignia). All insignia depicted were officially approved in accordance with OPNAVINST OPNAVINST Office of the Chief of Naval Operations Instruction  50304.4 (current version 5030.4F).

Background Information

1. When a squadron is redesignated, it normally continues to use the previously approved insignia and requests a change to the destination in the lower scroll.

2. The squadron indivated by an asterisk have continued to use the insignia from a former designation but have not officially update nation lower scroll.

3. Some cases squadrons have been officially authorized to use the insignia of an old squadron. This does not mean the squadron can trace its lineage back to the squadron that formerly used the design. For information on the evolution of squadron designations and lineage, see the following books published by the Naval Aviation History and Archives Office: Dictionary of American Naval Aviation Squadrons The Dictionary of American Naval Aviation Squadrons (DANAS) is a work being written by the Naval Historical Center.
