Computing environment used to design LPD 17 increased collaboration

and innovation, decreased manufacturing rework

Today at Avondale, Louisiana, the U.S. Navy christened the LPD 17, the first San Antonio-class amphibious assault ship. LPD Alliance partners Northrop Grumman Ship Systems, Intergraph Corporation and Raytheon Company are designing, building and supporting the 12 LPD-class ships, which replace 41 ships at the end of their service life. As technology partner for the Alliance, Intergraph Corporation developed the computing environment used to design and build the ship, contributing to more than $4 billion in estimated savings over the life of the ship class through decreased manufacturing rework and increased collaboration and innovation.

The LPD is the first major ship class in production designed and built using an integrated product data environment (IPDE), which combines computer-aided design, manufacturing and engineering (CAD/CAM/CAE) with enterprisewide data management and life-cycle support. The IPDE enabled collaborative teams across the U.S. to design the ship in a 3D environment prior to construction. Working in close cooperation with Navy and Marine Corps expeditionary forces, the teams designed the LPD 17 to include a number of technology and quality-of-life improvements based on suggestions by ship crews and owners, including sit-up berths, an advanced enclosed mast/sensor system and stern gate indicators. Because of the team's efforts, the LPD 17 was 80 percent design complete at keel laying and avoided millions of dollars in rework, winning the team the 2001 Department of Defense Value Engineering Award.
