U.S. Navy Adds Sun Workstations and Servers to NAVSEA and NAVAIR/SPAWAR CAD-2 Contracts.

WASHINGTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 26, 1996--Sun Microsystems, Inc., announced today that the United States Navy United States Navy

Major branch of the U.S. military forces, charged with defending the nation at sea and maintaining security on the seas wherever U.S. interests extend. The Continental Navy was established by the Continental Congress in 1775.
has added Sun(TM) workstations and servers to the Naval Sea Systems Command The Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) is the largest of the U.S. Navy's five "systems commands," or materiel organizations. NAVSEA consists of four shipyards, eight "warfare centers" (two undersea and six surface), four major shipbuilding locations and the NAVSEA headquarters,  (NAVSEA NAVSEA Naval Sea Systems Command

NAVAIR was established in 1966 as the successor to the Navy's Bureau of Naval Weapons (BuWeps).  and Space and Naval Warfare naval warfare

These workstations and servers will support a broad range of Sun solutions for enterprisewide applications, as well as Intergraph products running on the Solaris(TM) operating system, such as Intergraph's DM2 information management software. The contract was awarded to Sun Microsystems Federal, Inc.

"Intergraph is pleased to be able to offer Sun systems to our NAVSEA and NAVAIR/SPAWAR CAD-2 customers," said Edward A. Wilkinson, Intergraph Federal Systems executive vice president. "The addition of Sun workstations and servers to these CAD-2 contracts offers powerful RISC-based hardware that is truly scalable to match technical and business applications across the enterprise."

Workstation Graphics to Suit the Job

The Ultra(TM) 1 Model 140 workstation employs the Creator Graphics system for 24-bit, single-buffered 2-D graphics and imaging, enabling users to pan, zoom and rotate images, as well as to perform color conversion at unprecedented speeds. The Ultra 1 Model 170E and Ultra 2 Model 2200 systems are equipped with Creator 3-D for all fast image processing and MPEG (Moving Pictures Experts Group) An ISO/ITU standard for compressing digital video. Pronounced "em-peg," it is the universal standard for digital terrestrial, cable and satellite TV, DVDs and digital video recorders (DVRs).  video decompression of Creator graphics, plus accelerated 24-bit, double- and Z-buffered 3-D rendering -- perfect for visualization, 3-D modeling and advanced imaging.

Servers for Every Solaris Application

The new Ultra Enterprise(TM) servers include an unlimited-user license for the Solaris environment, a scalable, secure and reliable networked operating system for enterprise computing. Each Sun system can be scaled to the specific requirements of the work environment, for example:

-- The Ultra Enterprise 3000 server is a department system in a

tower package designed for office environments.

-- The Ultra Enterprise 4000 server is a desk-side departmental

system for database and business applications.

-- The Ultra Enterprise 5000 server is a symmetrical

multiprocessing (SMP (Symmetric MultiProcessing) A multiprocessing architecture in which multiple CPUs, residing in one cabinet, share the same memory. SMP systems provide scalability. As business increases, additional CPUs can be added to absorb the increased transaction volume. ) data center system, designed to handle

large-scale applications with thousands of users and

multi-terabyte data warehouses.

-- The Ultra Enterprise 6000 server is Sun's high-end SMP data

center system, with the performance and reliability required

for mainframe-class, mission-critical applications.

NAVSEA and NAVAIR/SPAWAR CAD-2

Since 1991, the U.S. Navy has been acquiring computer-aided design computer-aided design (CAD) or computer-aided design and drafting (CADD), form of automation that helps designers prepare drawings, specifications, parts lists, and other design-related elements using special graphics- and calculations-intensive , manufacturing and engineering (CAD/CAM/CAE) systems through the CAD-2 program.

The first CAD-2 contract, from NAVSEA was awarded to Intergraph in 1991 for engineering and design hardware, software and services for applications such as ship building, overhaul and repair.

The most recent CAD-2 contract, NAVAIR/SPAWAR CAD-2, was awarded in 1994 to Intergraph for computer-aided systems and services for electronic and mechanical design, manufacturing and engineering in aeronautical aer·o·nau·tic   also aer·o·nau·ti·cal

An agreement with the Department of Defense enables all branches of the U.S. military to purchase from these contracts, which have an eight-year term for hardware, software and services, as well as an additional four years for acquisition of maintenance and support services support services Psychology Non-health care-related ancillary services–eg, transportation, financial aid, support groups, homemaker services, respite services, and other services .
