Prior to distribution within the U.S. national park system, EarthShell completed a successful test market of its sandwich wraps in the Baltimore/Washington area over a three-month period. The wraps met test objectives for product performance and price validation in the marketplace.

The wraps use the same ingredients as other EarthShell Packaging products, such as plates and bowls, which are also in use in the national park system. These ingredients, such as limestone, starch and other biodegradable materials, result in packaging that is environmentally preferable compared to traditional foil or paper and plastic-laminated wraps. The wraps will be used by the parks to serve a variety of hot and cold sandwiches.

"Expanding EarthShell Packaging throughout the U.S. national park system has always been an important part of our plans," said Simon K. Hodson, chief executive officer of EarthShell Corporation. "We are excited that our new sandwich wraps are beginning use within the park system and feel that our products are a great complement to the environmental goals of the National Park Service. We are also very pleased with the results of the test market because it confirms that our environmentally preferable packaging performs well and is cost competitive. We believe that DuPont, with whom we recently signed a letter of intent, will build upon this test market feedback as they assume leadership for the development, production, marketing and distribution of the wraps."

In the Baltimore/Washington test market, several different wrap sizes were introduced in-market with a variety of hot and cold sandwiches and met fitness-for-use requirements, such as insulation, grease resistance, moisture retention and overall ease of use in operations. Feedback on the products, which are printed with the EarthShell logo and environmental message, was positive when compared to traditional laminated paper and foil wraps. The global sandwich wrap market is estimated at approximately $1 billion annually.

EarthShell sandwich containers, plates and bowls are designed with the environment in mind. Developed over many years using a "life cycle inventory" and in consultation with leading environmental experts, EarthShell products reduce the environmental burdens of rigid food service packaging through the careful selection of raw materials, processes and suppliers. The products are made primarily from natural limestone and potato starch. The new packaging poses substantially fewer risks to wildlife than polystyrene foam packaging because it biodegrades when exposed to moisture in nature, physically disintegrates in water when crushed or broken, and can be composted in a commercial facility (where available) or in your backyard. In addition, the company has recently introduced flexible packaging in the form of sandwich wraps that also have been developed using a "life cycle inventory." Like EarthShell's rigid packaging, the wraps also biodegrade when exposed to moisture and bacteria in nature and can be composted in a commercial facility (where available) or in your backyard.

EarthShell Corporation is engaged in licensing and commercializing its proprietary composite material technology for the manufacture of disposable food service packaging, including cups, plates, bowls, hinged-lid containers and sandwich wraps. In addition to certain environmental characteristics, EarthShell Packaging is designed to be cost- and performance-competitive compared to other food service packaging materials.
