U.S. LEGISLATORS PRESENT FREE ENTERPRISE AWARD TO AMWAY CO-FOUNDERS

TRAVERSE CITY, Mich., Aug. 11 /PRNewswire/ -- The American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) today will present its first-ever Adam Smith Free Enterprise Award to Amway Co-Founder and Chairman Jay Van Andel and Amway Co-Founder Rich DeVos.
The award, being presented at ALEC's 20th Annual Meeting in Traverse City, is given to a member of the private sector who has demonstrated a commitment to free markets, free enterprise, and limited government. DeVos and Van Andel, as co-founders of Amway, were named joint recipients of the honor.
"Jay Van Andel and Rich DeVos are sterling examples of the American entrepreneur," said Samuel A. Brunelli, ALEC executive director. "They have demonstrated that with vision, energy, creativity, and perseverance, American entrepreneurs, if given the freedom and opportunity to succeed, are second to none. We are honored that Mr. DeVos and Mr. Van Andel are the first recipients of the Adam Smith Free Enterprise Award. They embody the Jeffersonian principles upon which this nation, and ALEC, were founded."
Van Andel and DeVos founded Amway in 1959, and today it is the world's largest network marketing company, with 1992 sales of $3.9 billion at estimated retail. Amway employs more than 10,000 people worldwide, and over 2 million independent Amway distributors market products in 60 countries and territories worldwide.
For two decades, ALEC has been a leading voice for entrepreneurial capitalism in state capitals. It was founded in 1973 by a small group of Democratic and Republican legislators who shared a common commitment to Jeffersonian principles of free markets and democratic capitalism. ALEC state legislators are united by the belief that political and economic freedom unleashes human potential, and that wealth, jobs and opportunity are created by people, not government.
