Presented at the 79th Annual Meeting of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) was founded in 1920. It has grown to be the world's largest organization concerned with mathematics education, having close to 100,000 members across the USA and Canada, and internationally. (NCTM) in Orlando, Fla., 25 mathematics teachers from across the nation received grants of $10,000 each to implement innovative math programs for their K-12 classes. "TIME recognizes math teachers who help students understand and experience mathematics in real life situations," said Irv Miller, group vice president of external affairs at Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc. "Toyota is honored to be a part of a program that rewards innovative thought in the classroom." Developed through a partnership between Toyota and NCTM, TIME is one of the largest national grant programs offered to teachers of mathematics. Since 1997, Toyota and NCTM have awarded 149 grants to teachers in 45 states. "The projects that develop through Toyota TIME grants are truly inspirational," said Lee Stiff, president of NCTM. "These grants provide opportunities to students of all ages to engage in more challenging and creative mathematics." Administered by NCTM and its Mathematics Education Trust Foundation, TIME grants are evaluated by mathematics education experts and based on criteria such as new instructional strategies, innovative approaches and community and business partnerships. Among the innovative projects awarded grants this year is a fourth-grade class that will develop an exercise routine to increase cardiovascular strength, a group of sixth-graders in Rockledge, Fla., who will work with the Kennedy Space Center to design and build a test plane and a Philadelphia teacher whose "at-risk" students will build an electrical vehicle to enter in competitions. Toyota TIME grants are distributed during a two-year period, allowing for extended project-development time. Toyota also sponsors a summer seminar, between the first and second year of the grant, for recipients and experienced mentors from the mathematics community. Toyota TIME grants are one element of Toyota's national education program that comprises kindergarten through 12th-grade education initiatives, family literacy, technical training and support for higher education. In 2000, Toyota contributed more than $22 million to U.S. charities, with nearly 70 percent funding education.
