U.S. Government Testing Affirms Top Performance of L-1 Identity Solutions Facial and Iris Recognition Technologies.STAMFORD, Conn. -- L-1 Identity Solutions (NYSE NYSE See: New York Stock Exchange : ID) announced that the Company's facial and iris recognition Iris recognition is a method of biometric authentication that uses pattern recognition techniques based on high-resolution images of the irides of an individual's eyes. Not to be confused with another less prevalent ocular-based technology, retina scanning, iris recognition uses algorithms achieved tier one performance results in both the Facial Recognition Noun 1. facial recognition - biometric identification by scanning a person's face and matching it against a library of known faces; "they used face recognition to spot known terrorists" automatic face recognition, face recognition Vendor Test 2006 (FRVT FRVT Face Recognition Vendor Test 2006) and the Iris Challenge Evaluation (ICE 2006) sponsored by the National Institute of Standards and Technology National Institute of Standards and Technology, governmental agency within the U.S. Dept. of Commerce with the mission of "working with industry to develop and apply technology, measurements, and standards" in the national interest. It is one of three agencies that fall under the Technology Administration (www.technology. ). With performance results near or at the top of every single test conducted, the NIST test results offer important third party validation of the top-tier performance and functionality of the algorithms that underpin L-1's facial and iris biometric solutions. The FRVT 2006 and ICE 2006 evaluations test the state-of-the art underlying facial and iris recognition algorithms including matching accuracy performance for 2D still facial images, 3D facial scans and left and right iris images. Digital data sets were used to ensure that all participants were tested with identical data. Test images were sequestered se·ques·ter v. se·ques·tered, se·ques·ter·ing, se·ques·ters v.tr. 1. "These test results re-affirm our clear technological leadership in facial and iris recognition made possible by our continuing focus on biometric-based R&D efforts in our Corporate Research Center," said Robert V. LaPenta, L-1 Identity Solutions Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer. "Best-of-breed solutions begin with technology and people, but we extend our commitment beyond the technology itself with implementations that are customized to specific customer needs. In fact, L-1 solutions are widely deployed in large scale, mission critical implementations within government, law enforcement, military and commercial institutions around the world." L-1 Iris and Facial Recognition Achieve Top Tier Results in Federal Testing According to according to prep. 1. As stated or indicated by; on the authority of: according to historians. 2. In keeping with: according to instructions. 3. the Company's interpretation of the results: * L-1 facial recognition technology was the best "all around" performer. The L-1 facial algorithm scored at or near the top in every test conducted by NIST. This includes matching accuracy for 2D as well as 3D face recognition. In addition, the L-1 high resolution facial matching performance was comparable to iris matching performance. * L-1 iris recognition algorithms were two of the top three performers. The newest L-1 algorithm, developed by Professor John Daugman John Daugman is a physicist and computer-vision expert at the University of Cambridge Computer Laboratory. He is best known for his pioneering work in biometric identification, in particular the development of the Gabor wavelet based iris recognition algorithm that is (as of 2006) of Cambridge University and owned by exclusively by L-1, was validated as a top tier performer in accuracy. Dr. Daugman is L-1's Chief Scientist for Iris Recognition pursuant to a consulting agreement with the Company. The other L-1 algorithm was submitted by a third party under the name "Sagem-Iridian" and was based on a previous generation algorithm developed by Iridian Technology Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary Wholly Owned Subsidiary A subsidiary whose parent company owns 100% of its common stock. Notes: In other words, the parent company owns the company outright and there are no minority owners. of L-1 acquired by L-1 in August 2006. It should be noted that other than the top three performers, no other iris algorithm was able to complete the test in the allotted al·lot tr.v. al·lot·ted, al·lot·ting, al·lots 1. The latest L-1 Daugman algorithm completed the test in 6 hours compared to almost 300 hours of its nearest competitor - almost 50 times faster - at comparable accuracy. The specific facial recognition algorithm referred to in this announcement is from Viisage, an L-1 Identity Solutions company. Since the evaluation was conducted, L-1 Identity Solutions has continued advancing its facial and iris algorithms by combining the best elements of the algorithms produced by Viisage and Identix, another L-1 Identity Solutions Company that develops facial recognition technology. The work to combine the two algorithms into the next generation - G8 - was undertaken by the L-1 Corporate Research Center, which has responsibility for further developing the company's core biometric algorithms. G8, expected to be released sometime in Q3 2007, results in a further significant boost in matching speed and accuracy. G8 also addresses an implementation issue in the handling of very large image file sizes that, while not typically encountered in real world implementations, were encountered in the FRVT 2006 and affected the performance of the previous Identix algorithm. L-1 Identity Solutions packages its facial and iris technology in its ABIS ABIS Automated Biometric Identification System ABIS Andean Botanical Information System ABIS Advanced Battlespace Information System ABIS Asociación Boliviana de Ingeniería Sanitaria y Ambiental ABIS Amputee Body Image Scale ABIS Advanced Battlefield Information System [R] System, a multi-biometric identification platform that also incorporates fingerprint technology for traditional AFIS AFIS Automated Fingerprint Identification System AFIS Aerodrome Flight Information Service AFIS Armed Forces Radio and Television Service AFIS Airborne Flight Information System AFIS Automated Fingerprinting Identification System (Pakistan) applications.
