U.S. Genomics announced today its sponsorship of the Biophysical Society The Biophysical Society is an organization consisting of over 7,000 researchers in academia, government, and industry. Founded in 1957 by Ernest C. Pollard, the society exists to encourage the development and dissemination of knowledge in biophysics.  Outstanding Investigator Award in the Field of Single Molecule Biology. The sponsorship announcement coincides with the Biophysical Society 49th Annual Meeting, held this week in Long Beach, California Long Beach is a city located in southern Los Angeles County, California, USA, on the Pacific coast. It borders Orange County on its southeast edge. It is about 20 miles (30 km) south of downtown Los Angeles. . The Biophysical Society Awards Program honors its members by recognizing excellence in biophysics and promoting greater interaction among life scientists throughout the world.

"The Biophysical Society Annual Meeting is the premier event to acknowledge great achievements in single molecule biology," said Stephen P. Typically the president of the company, the CEO reports to the Chairman of the Board.  of U.S. Genomics. "As the pioneer of single molecule biology tools, U.S. Genomics is excited to establish the first award to recognize and promote outstanding contributions in this field."

"The Biophysical Society unanimously and enthusiastically supports the establishment of U.S. Genomics' Outstanding Investigator Award in the Field of Single Molecule Biology," said Stephen Harvey, President of the Biophysical Society. "This award will encourage future exploration and acknowledge excellence in this advanced area of biophysics research."

Descriptions of the award and criteria for nominations will be posted at www.biophysics.org. The first recipient of the Outstanding Investigator Award in the Field of Single Molecule Biology will be honored at the Biophysical Society's 50th Annual Meeting to be held February 18-22, 2006 in Salt Lake City, Utah For ships of the United States Navy of the same name, see .

About U.S. Genomics

U.S. Genomics is pioneering single molecule biology tools for the global life sciences industry. The company provides instruments and reagents for researchers in academia, contract service organizations, pharmaceutical and biotech companies, as well as healthcare providers. Combining advances in microfluidics, optical engineering, and novel labeling strategies, U.S. Genomics' innovative technologies allow genetics, functional genomics, biodefense, and diagnostics to be performed at the single molecule level. The Trilogy(TM) platform is the first commercially available technology to enable the direct detection and analysis of individual molecules of DNA DNA: see nucleic acid.
