U.S. EPA ORDERS MOUNTAIN VIEW FIRM TO CLOSE CONTAMINATED WELLS

SAN FRANCISCO, June 15 /PRNewswire/ -- The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (U.S. EPA) today announced that it has issued a final order to Mark Tuban Trust to permanently close 13 injection wells, four of which contain contaminated fluids, at Heart City Buick, a defunct car dealership at 111 West El Camino Real, Mountain View, Calif.
"These wells pose a threat of contamination to existing and future drinking water sources," said Harry Seraydarian, U.S. EPA's Water Management Division director. "U.S. EPA cannot allow this threat to drinking water supplies to remain unaddressed."
The order is part of an ongoing U.S. EPA enforcement initiative designed to identify and either properly close down or require the removal of sources of contamination from injection wells that may be endangering underground sources of drinking water.
The order requires the trust to submit a work plan to close the wells by July 16, 1993. U.S. EPA issued a proposed order to the firm for closure of the wells in 1991, and the wells were temporarily sealed.
Heart City Buick rented the property from the trust, which filed for bankruptcy. The trust is responsible for the wells, which are seepage pits that received water washed from the car service area and floor drains. The fluids contained lead, cadmium, arsenic, chromium, benzene, and 1,-2 dichloropropane at levels exceeding maximum contaminant levels for drinking water.
U.S. EPA prohibits the injection of fluids into wells that will endanger ground water that is or could be an underground source of drinking water.
