U.S. EPA BEGINS SAMPLING AT SAN GABRIEL SUPERFUND SITE

SAN FRANCISCO, Sept. 15 /PRNewswire/ -- The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (U.S. EPA) today announced it will begin a sampling program to measure the extent of soil and groundwater contamination at the Lee Pharmaceuticals Co. (AMEX: LPH), located in the San Gabriel Valley Superfund site. The Lee facility has been identified as one of several potential sources of volatile organic compound (VOC) contamination.
Groundwater and soil samples will be collected and then analyzed at the agency's mobile laboratory which will be located on the Lee property until the sampling is completed. The data collected during this assessment wil be used to locate potential sources and to determine the extent of the contamination. Sampling will also be conducted at several industrial facilities bordering the Lee facility.
Lee Pharmaceutical, a manufacturing facility since 1973, produces dental filling materials and cements, adhesives for artificial fingernails and various waxes for removing hair. The manufacturing processes use various solvents, acrylates, acids and petroleum products. The facility has an underground storage tank located beneath one of the buildings. High levels of VOCs have been detected at and around the storage tank.
The San Gabriel Valley Area Superfund site was placed on the National Priorities List (NPL) in 1984 because the groundwater is contaminated by VOCs. The NPL is the U.S. EPA's list of hazardous waste sites potentially posing the greatest long-term threat to public health and the environment. U.S. EPA identifies and ranks NPL sites according to threats to nearby populations through actual or potential contamination of groundwater, surface water or air.
