U.S. EPA AWARDS $50,000 GROUNDWATER GRANTS TO CALIFORNIA AGENCIES
SAN FRANCISCO, June 30 /PRNewswire/ -- The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (U.S. EPA) announced today that it will issue grants totaling $200,000 to the Kern County Resource Management Agency, the County of Los Angeles Department of Public Works, the County of Siskiyou Department of Public Health, and the Stanislaus County Department of Environmental Resources to implement their own groundwater protection programs.
The emphasis of these projects is to prevent contamination of groundwater from occurring by delineating wellhead protection areas and, within those areas, effectively regulating spills, leaks and the subsurface disposal of waste fluids into wells.
Each agency will receive $50,000 to protect groundwater in the following county areas: Kern County's west Bakersfield-Rosedale area; all of Siskiyou County; Los Angeles County's Montebello Forebay area and Whittier Narrows; and the Modesto metropolitan area of Stanislaus County.
The grant projects are designed to complement existing programs at the local level.
