U.S. EPA AND DIAL CORP. SETTLE PCB VIOLATIONS
 SAN FRANCISCO, Nov. 26 /PRNewswire/ -- The U.S. Environmental

Protection Agency today announced the signing of a consent agreement with Dial Corp. that resolves violations of federal regulations governing the proper management of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) at its South Gate, Calif., facility. The company, based in Phoenix, Ariz., also agreed to pay a civil penalty of $27,500.
As part of the settlement, Dial will demonstrate compliance with all applicable PCB regulations, including keeping inspection and maintenance records for PCB transformers, registering transformers with fire response personnel, and documenting cleanup of any PCB spills or leaks.
Today's agreement stems from a civil complaint issued by U.S. EPA under the federal Toxic Substances Control Act, which governs the proper management of PCBs.
PCBs belong to a broad family of organic chemicals known as chlorinated hydrocarbons. They are widely used in hydraulic and heat-transfer systems and as an insulating fluid in electrical equipment. U.S. EPA banned the manufacture of PCBs in 1979 because of their toxicity and persistence in the environment. They are classified as a probable human carcinogen.
