U.S. Department of Education Selects Three Pearson Digital Learning Solutions for $10 Million Study on Improving Student Achievement.Business Editors/Education Writers/High-Tech Writers MESA, Ariz.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 27, 2004 The U.S. Department of Education (ED) has selected three of Pearson Digital Learning's instructional solutions for a study to determine the effectiveness of educational technology for learning reading and math. The Waterford Early Reading Program (TM), KnowledgeBox(R) K-6 digital learning system, and SuccessMaker(R) Enterprise educational courseware will be part of the $10 million, congressionally-mandated study funded by the department's Institute of Education Sciences in collaboration with the Office of Educational Technology. The study, entitled "Evaluation of Educational Technology Interventions" (EETI EETI Essential Elements of Terrain Information EETI Electronic Engineering Times - India ), will provide information for policymakers and educators on how educational technology can improve student achievement in reading and math, as well as on the conditions and practices under which the technologies are most effective. EETI fulfills the No Child Left Behind Act's call for a national study of the conditions and practices necessary for technology to be used effectively to improve teaching and learning. "We enthusiastically support the Education Department's efforts to advance the use of scientifically-based research methods to measure the effectiveness of technology, and are honored to be a part of this effort," said Jack Lynch, president of Pearson Digital Learning. The three Pearson Digital Learning products were chosen for the study, along with 13 other computer-based reading and math products from different companies, in a peer-review process from a pool of 163 applications. Teachers will be trained to use the products, which will be deployed in schools during the 2004-05 school year. ED is expected to decide to extend deployment for a second school year, 2005-6, to evaluate the benefits of teachers becoming more familiar with the technology. Participating teachers will use the Waterford Early Reading Program to enhance the learning of reading in grade one; the KnowledgeBox digital learning system to enhance reading comprehension Reading comprehension can be defined as the level of understanding of a passage or text. For normal reading rates (around 200-220 words per minute) an acceptable level of comprehension is above 75%. in grade four; and the SuccessMaker Enterprise courseware for pre-algebra in grade six. Student achievement gains will be assessed at the end of the school year. The study will be conducted by Mathematica Policy Research Inc. of Princeton, N.J. and its subcontractor SRI International (company) SRI International - One of the world's largest contract research firms.
