U.S. DOD expands facial recognition license with Viisage Technology.

Viisage Technology, Inc. (NASDAQ:VISG) has announced that the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) has expanded its licensing of Viisage's identity verification solutions. The DoD's Combating Terrorism Technology Support Office (CTTSO) sponsors the development of advanced technology for inter-agency use in fighting terrorism. Through deployment of Viisage's biometrics architecture, which includes its core facial recognition technology and a scalable database design, federal and military organizations are able to accurately identify known terrorists and enhance homeland security effectiveness.

The CTTSO, which supports the Federal inter-agency Technical Support Working Group (TSWG) has built applications upon Viisage's core facial recognition and large biometrics database technology to design facial recognition applications specifically tailored to assist in the war on terror. The U.S. Army battle lab at Fort Huachuca, Arizona currently utilizes CTTSO biometrics solutions.

Using Viisage's technology, Fort Huachuca developed a biometrics-automated toolset that has proven highly effective for military and intelligence operatives. Information obtained from the facial recognition and other biometric technology may be merged into a central database and shared across agencies for use in several applications such as U.S. defense checkpoints. The biometrics solution is also used internally by the U.S. Army to verify the identity of U.S. troops, ensuring only the appropriate personnel gain access to classified areas, and for other access control and identity verification needs.
