U.S. DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE PRESENTS TOP FLORIDA AWARD
TO UNIVERSAL STUDIOS FLORIDA
ORLANDO, Fla., Nov. 21 /PRNewswire/ -- The National Committee for Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR) has selected Universal Studios Florida to receive the prestigious 1991 Pro Patria award. Pro Patria, in Latin, means "For the Nation" and signifies exceptionally meritorious service to the ESGR. Selected by the U.S. Department of Defense, a single Pro Patria award is given annually in each state and Universal Studios Florida was selected from more than 600 Florida entries.
Bill Sutton, chairman of the Florida Committee for ESGR, will present the award on Nov. 22 to Universal Studios Florida President Tom Williams at the committee's annual awards meeting, held this year at Universal. Also in attendance will be special guest speaker Donald C. Morency, the deputy assistant secretary of the Navy for Reserve Affairs.
The award recognizes Universal Studios Florida's patriotism and its contributions to the national defense through personnel policies which support employee participation in the National Guard and Reserve and extend beyond the requirements of the Veteran's Reemployment Rights Law. Universal's additional military support included a special Armed Forces Day celebration held May 18, 1991, when a sea of uniforms filled the studio complex as tens of thousands of military personnel and their families were honored by United States Secretary of Defense Dick Cheney. The celebration marked the kick-off of a six-month program during which Universal extended free admission to more than 100,000 U.S. active and reserve military personnel. The military salute culminated on Veteran's Day (Nov. 11, 1991) with a parade and ceremonies including a special appearance by General Carl W. Stiner, commander in chief of the United States Special Operations Command.
"Universal Studios Florida is proud to play an active role in supporting the national defense through our personnel programs," said Williams, president of Universal Studios Florida. "It is important to recognize and support those who give so generously of themselves for the independence and safety of America."
Universal Studios Florida, the largest studio production facility outside of Hollywood, is a joint venture between MCA Inc. and the Rank Organisation. With Steven Spielberg as creative consultant, Universal Studios Florida takes visitors beyond the screen and into the world of television and film -- to "ride the movies."
