U.S. Census Bureau releases demographic information in more timely manner. (Building Blocks).

Morris County, N.J., had the highest median household income The median household income is commonly used to provide data about geographic areas and divides households into two equal segments with the first half of households earning less than the median household income and the other half earning more.  among all large counties and independent cities in the United States United States, officially United States of America, republic (2005 est. pop. 295,734,000), 3,539,227 sq mi (9,166,598 sq km), North America. The United States is the world's third largest country in population and the fourth largest country in area.  in 2000. Its $82,063 median household income put it ahead of previous leader Fairfax Fairfax, city (1990 pop. 19,622), historic seat of Fairfax co., NE Va., a residential suburb of Washington, D.C.; inc. 1892, as a city 1961 (at which time it became independent and no longer included in a county). There is some light manufacturing.  County, Va., which came in second at $82,036.

The household income data comes from the U.S. Census Bureau's Census 2000 Supplementary Survey. It is intended to be a survey program that will permit the collection of long-form type information at the same time as, but separate from, the Decennial de·cen·ni·al

(ACS (Asynchronous Communications Server) See network access server. ) to collect demographic, social, economic and housing data from a national sample of 700,000 households.

The Census 2000 Supplementary Survey was conducted in 1,203 counties with monthly samples of about 58,000 housing units. The Census 2000 Supplementary Survey is designed to be used in combination with data from the ACS to produce annual estimates. Economic, demographic and housing characteristics from the Census 2000 Supplementary Survey are reported for the United States, as well as large counties and cities.

The ACS is a tool that the Census Bureau Noun 1. Census Bureau - the bureau of the Commerce Department responsible for taking the census; provides demographic information and analyses about the population of the United States

In his testimony before Congress regarding the Hawaiian Islands on January 3, 1894, William Alexander reported:

In 2003, The American Community Survey, if funded, will provide data similar to that collected on the census' long form. Demographic, social, economic and homing profiles can be produced annually for areas and subgroups with 65,000 or more people. The information collected in 2003 will become available mid- mid-

enough samples to provide estimates similar to the quality of the census long form. Areas of 20,000 or more people will use a three-year average; information will begin to be available in 2006, and will be updated every year thereafter.

Areas of less than 20,000 people will use a five-year average; information will become available in 2008, and will be updated every year thereafter. The American Community Survey, if successful, will eliminate the need for a long form in the 2010 decennial census.

Most important is that ACS offers the potential to provide data--economic, demographic and housing characteristics--on a timelier basis than is currently available through the decennial censuses. Also it could reduce the need to do updates of the data using the most recent decennial census as a base. Some data elements still are being updated using the 1990 Census information as a base by both public and private data providers.

The table on page 28 presents the median income estimates from the Census 2000 Supplementary Survey for the 50 counties with the highest levels, selected other counties in major metropolitan areas and the 10 areas with the lowest medians. Data was published for 216 large counties and independent cities that are not part of a county (i.e. Baltimore Baltimore, city (1990 pop. 736,014), N central Md., surrounded by but politically independent of Baltimore co., on the Patapsco River estuary, an arm of Chesapeake Bay; inc. 1745.  City). The upper and lower statistical bounds for the median estimates also are presented.

There is a distinct concentration of an overwhelming majority of the top 50 median income counties in a limited number of greater metropolitan areas. Thirty-nine areas among the top 50 are located in just eight greater metropolitan areas.
