 general interest magazine and took prestigious first-place Awards of Excellence in a record-breaking eight other categories, including: best theme coverage, best column ("Margin Notes"), best humor humor, according to ancient theory, any of four bodily fluids that determined man's health and temperament. Hippocrates postulated that an imbalance among the humors (blood, phlegm, black bile, and yellow bile) resulted in pain and disease, and that good health was  piece, most personally useful article, best biblical interpretation, best cover, best illustration, and best photography. The judges said U.S. CATHOLIC features "intelligent writing from the forefront of American Catholicism."

The top honor the CPA (Computer Press Association, Landing, NJ) An earlier membership organization founded in 1983 that promoted excellence in computer journalism. Its annual awards honored outstanding examples in print, broadcast and electronic media. The CPA disbanded in 2000.  gives to a writer or editor, the Individual Excellence Award, was awarded to U.S. CATHOLIC senior editor Catherine O'Connell-Cahill. She was recognized not only for her work on U.S. CATHOLIC but also for writing a monthly column for and editing At Home With Our Faith, a monthly newsletter for families. The judges called her "a yeoman yeoman (yō`mən), class in English society. The term has always been ill-defined, but generally it means a freeholder of a lower status than gentleman who cultivates his own land.  Catholic who demonstrates excellence as a writer and editor."

The magazine also took first-place honors for best interview (with Sister Dianna Ortiz Dianna Ortiz is a U.S Roman Catholic nun of the Ursuline order. She is a native of New Mexico. While serving as a missionary in Guatemala in 1989, she was abducted by right-wing forces and brutally tortured. ), best poetry, best photo story, best short story, and best regular column ("Testaments"). Second-place honors were also awarded for best cover, best editorial, best photo story, best interview, and best feature. Judges called Testaments "world-class writing."

6 AWARDS FROM THE RELIGION COMMUNICATORS COUNCIL

U.S. CATHOLIC received the Best of Class Award for Graphic Design as well as Awards of Excellence for photography and periodical writing ("Testaments") and the Award of Merit for best in class, periodical. Other Awards of Merit were for "Margin Notes" and feature writing.
