U.S. CHAMPIONSHIPS 35 TEAMS FROM THROUGHOUT NATION TO PLAY FOR MEN'S SOFTBALL CROWNS.

LANCASTER - Some 700 softball players and their families from all over the United States United States, officially United States of America, republic (2005 est. pop. 295,734,000), 3,539,227 sq mi (9,166,598 sq km), North America. The United States is the world's third largest country in population and the fourth largest country in area.  will descend on Lancaster on Labor Day Labor Day, holiday celebrated in the United States and Canada on the first Monday in September to honor the laborer. It was inaugurated by the Knights of Labor in 1882 and made a national holiday by the U.S. Congress in 1894.  weekend for two national championship tournaments.

The Amateur Softball Association Men's Class A Fast Pitch and the U.S. Specialty Sports Association Men's Class C Slow Pitch national championship tournaments will attract 35 teams.

The games will begin at 5:30 p.m. Thursday at Lancaster City Park. Admission is free.

City officials said they competed for the chance to host the tournaments because of the tourism money they bring in - an estimated $200,000 for local hotels, restaurants, gas stations and other businesses.

Teams are coming from Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, North Dakota North Dakota, state in the N central United States. It is bordered by Minnesota, across the Red River of the North (E), South Dakota (S), Montana (W), and the Canadian provinces of Saskatchewan and Manitoba (N). , Oregon, Washington and other states.

The Amateur Softball Association designated Lancaster as the 2002 tournament site during a meeting almost two years ago in Spokane, Wash., and the Specialty Sports Association decision came last November in Orlando, Fla.

Softball tournaments annually bring an estimated $2 million in revenue to local businesses, city officials said.
