U.S. Air Force awards Cubic Defense Systems $23.9 million Joint STARS contract.SAN DIEGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 12, 1996--The U.S. Air Force Electronic Systems Command has awarded Cubic Defense Systems Inc. a $23.9 million contract to build 15 ground data terminals plus spare units for the Joint Surveillance Target Attack Radar System (Joint STARS), the company announced Thursday Thursday: see week. . Joint STARS is one of the most sophisticated battlefield management systems ever developed. It received widespread acclaim for its performance during Operations Desert Storm and Joint Endeavor. The system allowed the military to look behind enemy lines and to obtain intelligence and targeting data. Under terms of the Air Force contract, the subsidiary of San Diego-based Cubic Corp., will build a total of 15 ground data terminals and spares, over a two and one-half-year period. This is the fourth production lot option exercised under the basic contract awarded in September September: see month. 1993. Since the initial contract was awarded, Cubic has received contracts totaling $66.9 million for its Joint STARS work. Work on the program has begun and the first production unit of this Lot IV is scheduled for delivery in February February: see month. 1998. From that time on, Cubic will deliver at a rate of approximately two per month until all the units are delivered, said Douglas Douglas, city, Isle of Man Douglas, city (1991 pop. 19,950), capital of the Isle of Man, Great Britain. Cubic has completed deliveries for Lots I and II, 14 GDTs plus spares, and plans to ship the first Lot III unit in September, said David S. Miller David S. The Cubic-built data link, one of the system's key elements, is a jam-resistant radio communication system that allows radar images and moving target indications to be broadcast from the converted Boeing 707 aircraft to multiple ground stations and for messages to be exchanged between the Joint STARS aircraft and ground support units. The data link incorporates the most sophisticated anti-jamming techniques and has passed extensive field tests, Fouser said.
