U.S. ATTORNEY MICHAEL CHERTOFF JOINS LATHAM & WATKINS TO HEAD NATIONAL WHITE COLLAR ENFORCEMENT/INTERNAL INVESTIGATIONS PRACTICE

Nationally Recognized Prosecutor Joins International Law Firm
NEW YORK, April 28 /PRNewswire/ -- Michael Chertoff, departing U.S. Attorney for the District of New Jersey, will join the international law firm of Latham & Watkins as a partner, effective May 1, 1994, and will head the firm's national White Collar Enforcement/Internal Investigations practice, according to Philip E. Coviello, managing partner of the firm's New York office.
Nationally known for his outstanding prosecutorial record, Chertoff has served as U.S. Attorney for New Jersey since 1990, and was First Assistant U.S. Attorney from 1987-90. Prior to his appointment in New Jersey, Chertoff served for four years as an Assistant United States Attorney in the Southern District of New York. He has won a number of highly visible cases, including the 1986 Mafia "Commission" RICO case in New York, the 1991 fraud conviction of former Jersey City Mayor Gerald McCann, and the 1993 securities fraud racketeering case against electronics czar "Crazy Eddie" Antar. Also in 1992, Chertoff led the prosecutions of the kidnappers of Exxon executive Sidney Reso, and of Sol Wachtler, the former Chief Judge of the New York Court of Appeals. Most recently, he argued before the Third Circuit Court of Appeals in support of a trial court order limiting the ability of news reporters to question former jurors about their deliberations in criminal trials, a case that is expected to have far-reaching impact on how the media covers trials.
Chertoff graduated from Harvard Law School in 1978, and clerked for Judge Murray Gurfein of the U.S. Court of Appeals in New York, and for Justice William J. Brennan Jr. of the United States Supreme Court. He started his career with Latham & Watkins in 1980, and spent three years with the firm's litigation practice in its Washington D.C. office.
"Mike Chertoff is one of the most outstanding litigators in the country and his decision to return to the firm and head our national white collar practice is highly gratifying to us," said Coviello.
Initially, Chertoff will be based in the firm's New York office but Latham & Watkins expects to open an office in Newark before year end, Coviello said. He pointed out that the Newark office will focus on environmental, healthcare and litigation practices, combining several of Latham's most highly regarded strengths.
"Latham & Watkins was my first choice when I left law school and it was my first choice when I decided to return to private practice," Chertoff said. "I am looking forward to joining with my former colleagues in what is today one of the finest groups of litigators in the country."
Latham's National White Collar Practice includes William Braniff (San Diego office), former United States Attorney for the Southern District of California; Russell Heyman (Los Angeles office), former Assistant United States Attorney for the Central District of California and former Chief of Staff of the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration; Steven Bauer (San Francisco office), former Assistant United States Attorney for the Central District of California; and Thomas Patten who heads the firm's white collar practice in Washington D.C.
Latham & Watkins is one of the nation's largest law firms with 550 lawyers and offices in Los Angeles, Orange County, Washington D.C., San Diego, Chicago, New York, San Francisco, London and Moscow.
