U S WEST CELLULAR TO OFFER EMERGENCY PHONE SYSTEM TO BOATERS
BELLEVUE, Wash., May 23 /PRNewswire/ -- A new telephone emergency system will become available to U S WEST Cellular customers on Saturday, May 23, the first day of the Swiftsure boating race, U S WEST Cellular announced today.
The system allows U S WEST Cellular customers to dial (asterisk)CG on their cellular phones to report distress or maritime hazards directly to the Coast Guard. Calls will be routed directly to the Coast Guard's Group Seattle Operations Center at Pier 36. The "star" sign must be pressed before the "CG" (numbers two and four on the telephone dial pad) to activate the emergency response system. Calls placed using the system will be toll and airtime free.
The (asterisk)CG program will act as a supplement to the internationally recognized marine radio channel 16 distress channel. Boaters are encouraged to use marine radio channel 16 as the primary means for reporting an emergency.
The (asterisk)CG program is available on Lake Washington, throughout Puget Sound and British Columbian waters through an agreement with B.C. Cellular.
