U S WEST CELLULAR INTRODUCES FIRST FIBER OPTIC CELLULAR NETWORK;
 ESTABLISHES SECOND SWITCH SITE FOR CELLULAR SERVICE
 BELLEVUE, Wash., Dec. 16 /PRNewswire/ -- The following was released today by U S WEST Cellular:
 The first fiber optic cellular network ever developed for the Puget Sound area has been activated by U S WEST Cellular, increasing U S WEST Cellular's call capacity more than tenfold and establishing a new standard for call reliability.
 In a related development, U S WEST Cellular also has constructed a second switching site in the Puget Sound area, establishing the company has the only cellular firm in the area to operate multiple switch sites.
 Technological advances were announced today by John DeFeo, president and chief operating officer of U S WEST NewVector Group Inc., of which U S WEST Cellular is a division. DeFeo said the $35 million in improvements position the company to expand and still maintain system integrity for U S WEST Cellular's current customers.
 Called the Self-Healing Network Service (SHNS), the fiber optic network provides instant, automatic re-routing of calls if they meet transmission interruptions in the routing process. The network, which is constructed in a ring configuration, allows bi-directional routing of calls, whereby conventional systems route more slowly in a single direction.
 "Also, the fact that there are two switch sites on the fiber optic ring, coupled with the bi-directional routing, increases call reliability nearly beyond measure," DeFeo said.
 SHNS expands the system's network to handle calls at any given second from 50,000 to 500,000. DeFeo likened the fiber optic advancement to widening a five-lane freeway to 50 lanes.
 "This has solidly positioned U S WEST Cellular to handle future growth and, even more importantly, continue to improve and offer quality service to current customers," DeFeo said. "We will not sacrifice quality for growth so we have developed these 'win-win' innovations to meet both challenges."
 DeFeo said another advantage of the fiber-optic network over conventional land-line and micro-wave links is boosted reliability during bad weather or natural calamities such as earthquakes. The fiber optic system also is not affected by electrical storms.
 He said a third switch site will be established along the fiber optic network by early 1992, which will further increase call capacity and accelerate the call-routing process.
 Headquartered in Bellevue, U S WEST NewVector Group Inc., has operations in 15 Midwestern, Western and Southwestern states. The company operates 27 Metropolitan Statistical Areas (MSA) and 21 Rural Service Areas (RSA) Cellular systems. U S WEST Cellular is a division of NewVector. NewVector also offers paging service in 88 markets.
 NewVector is a subsidiary of U S WEST Inc., (NYSE: USW) a diversified corporation based in Englewood, Colo.
