U GOTTA SEE THIS.

Byline: -- Rob Lowman

The 1941 ``Dumbo'' was Walt Disney's fourth animated film, following ``Pinocchio,''' ``Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs'' and ``Fantasia fantasia (făntā`zhə) [Ital.,=fancy], musical composition not restricted to a formal design, but constructed freely in the manner of an improvisation. In the 16th and 17th cent. .''

In some ways it was less ambitious than the others, but the story of Dumbo Dumbo

, the baby elephant with the big ears who is the object of ridicule, is sweetest of them all.

Ultimately, it's about tolerance, wrapped in a colorful tale with some enjoyable tunes (``Baby Mine'' and ``When I See an Elephant Fly'').

Of course, it takes Dumbo being able to fly to be accepted among those in the three-ring circus three-ring circus

he calls home. Until then, he's been separated from his mother (a recurring Disney theme) and his only friend, Timothy J. Mouse, hardly a figure of stature among the lions and tigers of the circus. Worse, Dumbo has been made a clown. ``Socially, he's washed up,'' Timothy tells the sympathetic crows. (Yes, one of them is named Jim, an allusion to the racial separation policies prevalent then in the South and other parts of America.)

Some have seen the crows as a racist portrayal, but they're shown being on the outside, too. And it's the crows that use psychology (the magic feather) to get Dumbo to fly.

The new ``Big Top Edition'' ($29.99) of ``Dumbo'' improves upon the 2001 release with a sparkling remastered version, which looks great, especially during ``Pink Elephants Noun 1. pink elephants - any visual hallucination arising from heavy drinking

Extras include a commentary track with animation historian John Canemaker, who offers a wealth of information for film buffs.

For history buffs, there's Walt Disney's original TV introduction to the film and a 15-minute documentary on the film called ``Celebrating Dumbo,'' hosted by Leonard Maltin. There are two animated shorts, ``Elmer Elephant'' and ``The Flying Mouse''; sing-alongs; a game called ``My First Circus,'' helping children learn to identify circus animals; and a read-along DVD DVD: see digital versatile disc.
