Soul singer Sharon Jones Sharon Jones is an American soul/funk singer. Biography
Born Sheron Lafaye Jones, on May 4 1956 in Augusta, Georgia, she moved to New York at an early age and lives there now, recording for independent Brooklyn based recording label Daptone Records.

After only a couple of hours' sleep, the 50-year-old Jones was up again, heading back to the East Village to sing for an altogether different audience -- kids and their parents anxious to bop BOP Oncology A chemotherapy regimen: 1. ``I didn't realize I would be working with so many babies,'' Jones says, laughing, as she talks by phone while heading to Jersey's Lake Bayonne for an afternoon fishing trip. ``But let me tell you, by the end of the show, I was sweating. They make you move, those babies do.''

The music on ``Baby Loves Jazz'' contains plenty of rhythm to get kids shaking their bottoms.

But this isn't some watered-down version of America's great art form. The players are a who's who Who’s Who

The players add funk and fizz to an assortment of children's music standards -- ``Happy and You Know It,'' ``Old MacDonald,'' ``The Wheels on the Bus'' -- songs you thought you'd never want to hear again until you listen to this band performing them.

But the disc really hits its stride at the end as it downshifts into bedtime mode. Jones delivers a lovely gospel take on ``You Are My Sunshine,'' followed by a dreamy dream·y

, seven-minute ``Banana Boat Song'' and the closing ``Lullaby Jazz,'' guaranteed to create sweet dreams for anyone who hears it.

``That lullaby song is the one I remember,'' Jones says. ``I just got so relaxed singing that song. It's pure peace.''

Jones doesn't have children of her own, just a ``heap of nieces and nephews,'' as well as the kids she works with at her Brooklyn church where she has been active as a choir director and organist.

``I'm a big kid myself,'' she says with a hearty laugh. ``Nobody has to tell me what kids like -- my mind is there already.''

Jones and the Dap-Kings will be at the Henry Fonda Theater on Sept. 22, showcasing the hard-driving funk from their two standout albums as well as five new numbers they'll be recording this fall for their next release.

``We're looking at recording in October and November, finishing up in December and having something out in the spring,'' Jones says. ``Then it's back on the road doing what we love to do.''

``Baby Loves Jazz: Go baby Go'' is available in stores and online.
