FREMONT, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 12, 2001

Tyan(R) Computer Corporation today announced that they have initiated shipments of their next-generation dual-processor DDR-based platform for the AMD (Advanced Micro Devices, Inc., Sunnyvale, CA, www.amd.com) A major manufacturer of semiconductor devices including x86-compatible CPUs, embedded processors, flash memories, programmable logic devices and networking chips.  Athlon(TM) MP processor. The new Tiger MPX MPX - Multiplexor Channel  system board utilizes the new AMD-760(TM) MPX chipset to provide breakthrough performance for I/O-intensive applications.

Tyan, a leading designer and manufacturer of Internet infrastructure products and system board solutions, is one of a handful of system board suppliers utilizing the new AMD-760 MPX chipset. Tyan's existing product line also includes platforms based on the AMD-760 MP chipset. The award-winning Thunder K7 and Tiger MP system boards were the world's first platforms to support the AMD Athlon MP processor.

The Tiger MPX features a variety of expansion slots including AGP (Accelerated Graphics Port) A high-speed 32-bit port from Intel for attaching a display adapter to a PC. It provides a direct connection between the card and memory, and only one AGP slot is on the motherboard. , 32-bit PCI (1) (Payment Card Industry) See PCI DSS.

It is used to measure the transmission speed of electronic devices, including channels, buses and the computer's internal clock. A one-megahertz clock (1 MHz) means some number of bits (16, 32, 64, etc.  64-bit PCI. It also supports up to 3GB of high-speed Double Data Rate (DDR (Double Data Rate) Refers to an SDRAM memory chip that increases performance by doubling the effective data rate of the frontside bus. "Building on our long-term partnership with AMD, Tyan has once again produced an exciting new AMD processor-based platform for the multiprocessor market. Designed for the AMD Athlon MP processor and around the AMD-760 MPX chipset, the Tiger MPX is engineered to provide blistering computational and I/O (Input/Output) The transfer of data between the CPU and a peripheral device. Every transfer is an output from one device and an input to another. See PC input/output.

About the AMD-760(TM) MPX Chipset

The AMD-760(TM) MPX chipset is a high-performance, two-way multiprocessor core logic solution for the AMD Athlon(TM) MP family of processors, offering Multi-Processor eXtended (MPX) performance compared to its predecessor, the AMD-760(TM) MP chipset. The AMD-760 MPX chipset offers extended performance through a 66MHz/64-bit/32-bit PCI bus and a feature-rich peripheral bus controller that provides PCI-to-PCI bridging capability.

The AMD-760(TM) MPX chipset consists of two chips -- the AMD-762(TM) system controller (northbridge), and the AMD-768(TM) peripheral bus controller (southbridge). The AMD-760 MPX chipset unleashes the power of DDR memory technology, which combines with other sophisticated core logic in data, memory and I/O control as well as system and power management to provide a powerful solution for server and workstation platforms. The AMD-760 MPX chipset supports up to two AMD Athlon MP processors with independent 266MHz front side buses, as well as PC2100 DDR memory and AGP 4x graphics.

About the AMD Athlon(TM) MP Processor

The AMD Athlon MP processor is a seventh-generation x86 processor designed for high-performance multiprocessing servers and workstations. A key advantage of AMD's multiprocessing platform is Smart MP technology, which greatly enhances overall platform performance by increasing data movement between the two CPUs, chipset and memory system. Smart MP technology features dual point-to-point, high-speed 266MHz system buses with Error Correcting Code (ECC (1) (Error-Correcting Code) A type of memory that corrects errors on the fly. See ECC memory.

(2) (Elliptic Curve Cryptography) A public key cryptography method that provides fast decryption and digital signature processing.

of bus bandwidth in a dual-processor system. Smart MP technology also has an optimized Modified Owner Exclusive Shared Invalid (MOESI MOESI Modified Owner Exclusive Shared Invalid ) cache coherency protocol that manages data and memory traffic in a multiprocessing environment.

The AMD Athlon MP processor features the patented QuantiSpeed(TM) architecture, which includes a high performance full-speed cache with hardware data pre-fetch, a fully pipelined superscalar floating point engine, and an exclusive L2 Translation Look-aside Buffer (storage, architecture) Translation Look-aside Buffer - (TLB) A table used in a virtual memory system, that lists the physical address page number associated with each virtual address page number. A TLB is used in conjunction with a cache whose tags are based on virtual addresses.  (TLB TLB - Translation Look-aside Buffer ). The processor also incorporates 3DNow!(TM) Professional technology, which has 51 new instructions that extend AMD's 3DNow! technology, enabling smoother, richer and more lifelike images, more precise digital audio and an enriched Internet experience. The AMD Athlon MP processor is compatible with AMD's stable Socket A infrastructure, and supports DDR memory technology.
