State Department of Transportation crews at first believed they could make the changes without closing the ramp but soon realized that many drivers blow through the freeway-to-freeway link at dangerously high speeds. So officials decided they'd close the ramp and put the barriers in place to keep workers safe, district manager Mike Spaeth said. On an average day, 5,310 car and truck drivers use the ramp. City of Eugene traffic supervisor Damon Joyner said the ramp closure shouldn't tangle city traffic to any noticeable degree. "Our motorists will quickly adapt to the additional challenges," he said. Here are three detour options for drivers headed south on I-5: Three tight turns - Drive past the closed ramp, take the eastbound east·bound adj. Take the eastbound Interstate 105 exit toward Springfield but after you cross the freeway, turn left onto the northbound I-5 exit, then take the westbound Belt Line Road exit. Wide swings - Pass both Belt Line Road exits and continue south.
