"The MMA7260Q demonstrates Freescale's commitment to the sensor market," said Paul Grimme, senior vice president and general manager of Freescale's Transportation and Standard Products Group. "Our acceleration sensor has proven to be very popular and is in high demand for embedded systems requiring measurement of low g forces, which can damage sensitive electronics components. Key applications range from handheld consumer appliances and industrial and healthcare monitoring applications to computer peripherals."

Through the end of this month, EDN's global audience of electronics engineers and managers will use an online ballot to help select winners from the list of finalists. EDN's editorial staff and Editorial Advisory Board will also weigh in to determine the winners. Winners will be announced at an EDN awards ceremony on April 3 in San Jose, Calif., at the Embedded Systems Conference. About MPC8548E communications processors

Freescale's MPC8548E PowerQUICC(TM) III communications processor family defines innovation by delivering extreme integration, gigahertz-class performance and multiple high-speed interconnects -- all within an attractive price envelope for cost-sensitive, yet computationally intensive embedded applications. The MPC8548E family features the first PowerQUICC devices based on Freescale's 90 nm SOI (Silicon On Insulator) A chip architecture that increases transistor switching speed by reducing capacitance (build-up of electrical charges in the transistor's elements), and thus reducing the discharge time. The power requirement is also reduced in some designs.  copper interconnect technology, enabling high performance at low power dissipation. They are also the first Freescale processors to support a combination of high-speed interconnects: Serial RapidIO(R) technology, PCI Express and four Gigabit Ethernet interfaces.

About the MMA7260Q acceleration sensor

The MMA7260Q sensor is a micro-electromechanical system (MEMS (MicroElectroMechanical Systems) Tiny mechanical devices that are built onto semiconductor chips and are measured in micrometers. In the research labs since the 1980s, MEMS devices began to materialize as commercial products in the mid-1990s. ) device designed to sense acceleration in three directions. It is the only single-package, triple-axis accelerometer of its kind in the industry. As an industry first, the MMA7260Q includes a g-select feature that ranges from 1.5g to 6g, giving designers the flexibility to select a g-force detection level to address multifunctional applications needs. This acceleration detection technology is ideal for end products or embedded systems requiring measurement of low g forces resulting from fall, tilt, motion, positioning, shock or vibration. Additional features include a sleep mode at 3 micro amps, a low operating current of 500 micro amps, a fast power-up response time of 1 ms and a small QFN QFN Quad Flat No-Lead
